Employer: Ashley Miller Photography
Job Title: Photographer and Photography Assistant
2010 graduate, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography, The Art Institutes International Minnesota
One week after graduation, Ashley Miller applied for an internship that was as powerful in subject matter as in career opportunity. She landed the job—working with David Sherman on a Holocaust survivor project. Her dedication paid off and Sherman hired her to assist him on other projects—everything from corporate gatherings to events for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
In addition to her work with Sherman, Ashley works as an assistant for photographer Liz Banfield. Her tasks include importing images for clients and setting up lighting. She emphasizes that not all parts of the job are glamorous—she's had to sweep floors. "It all depends on the criteria of the photo shoot," she states.
Ashley knows that every step she takes gets her closer to achieving her professional goals. She's embarking on her own freelance career, photographing weddings and taking portraits. "Nothing beats picking up my camera and taking photos," she asserts, adding, "Remember when you're sweeping the floors that it gets better. You have to start somewhere."
