Class of 2010

The Art Institutes International Minnesota
Employer: Apogee Commemoratives
Job Title: Graphic Designer

Class of 2010, Graphic Design, The Art Institutes International Minnesota

Hard-working, determined, and driven. Those are the words Meghan Syndergaard uses to describe herself and her commitment to her job as a graphic designer. Working as the only designer for Apogee Commemoratives, an award company, she oversees award designs and renderings, as well as typesetting and page layouts.

Going in for an interview soon after graduation, Meghan knew that she needed to present herself well. She showed that she could balance hard work with a fun and upbeat attitude—and won over the interviewers at Apogee. "Honestly, I think my attitude is what made me stand out," she says.

Meghan finds creative freedom through designing awards and watching them transform into actual pieces for clients. Her inspiration lies in impressionists and their use of color and light—a throwback to her fine arts background. She recommends that current students listen and learn from instructors and have realistic expectations of what a first job will be. "You may have to start low on the totem pole, but any kind of experience is good. Just appreciate and learn from any opportunities that you are given."
