Working in marketing and communications support for Tyco in Barcelona, Spain provides Tomas Marino with many benefits—but never provides him with a “typical” day. His job involves supporting marketing for continental Europe, the Middle East market, England, Russia, and Australia. “The materials I create (include) marketing brochures, product catalogues, packaging, advertising, and stands for trade shows,” he states. He’s also responsible for implementation of the corporate identity Tyco’s different brands. “I love being able to create visual communication solutions that help (to solve) comprehension problems and sell products,” he adds.
Today he looks back on his education and states that The Art Institute of Charlotte helped him to gain the skills he needed to break into the industry. “It really helped me think outside the box and I met some great professors that made the students become the best they could be.”
Tomas, who in 2005 earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Graphic Design from The Art Institute of Charlotte, adds that he loves being able to work with Apple Computers. “Back in the 60s it probably was not that fun to be a designer,” he jokes. He encourages creative people to be innovative and push their ideas. “Don’t follow trends. Set them!”
