The Art Institute of Washington is located in the Rosslyn section of Arlington, Virginia. Arlington County is an urban area of about 26 square miles located directly across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.

Arlington is perhaps best known as the home of the Pentagon, the Iwo Jima Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. Its population is diverse; one in five residents is foreign-born, and one in four speaks a language other than English at home. Major employers in the region include MCI Telecommunications Corporation, Bell Atlantic Network Services, Inc., and Gannett/USA Today Company, Inc. New media businesses are also thriving in the area, including America Online, headquartered in nearby Dulles, Virginia.

The Arlington community is home to the Fashion Center at Pentagon City with over 150 stores and the Crystal City Underground and Plaza Shops, which hosts over 120 retail shops. In addition, Arlington has over 170 county parks and playgrounds, including over 80 miles of bicycle routes and jogging trails.

Feel like exploring? Hop in your car or on the Metrorail and explore Washington, D.C. For starters, there's The Smithsonian Institution (16 museums and the National Zoo) and numerous world-class art museums. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and of course, government landmarks too numerous to mention.
