The Art Institute of Austin, in conjunction with The Art Institute of Pittsburgh — Online Division, offers an online course option which enables campus-based students to take select online courses alongside traditional courses offered on campus. The flexibility of online courses can help students better manage hectic family, work and school schedules. Regardless of whether an Art Institute course is presented online or in a traditional classroom, the quality of the course and qualifications of the faculty are comparable. There are, however, some inherent differences between taking class online and on campus:
- You may attend an online class with other students from your campus, but the majority of online classes you take will include students from across the Art Institutes system.
- Most online classes are accelerated and presented in 5-1/2 weeks, in half the time of a traditional quarter term. Although courses are faster paced, they contain the same content and assignments you would find in a comparable campus-based class.
- Most online classes utilize digital textbooks, which can be easily accessed from your online classroom and downloaded to your personal computer. In many cases, these digital texts can save you money.
- While you are enrolled in an online course, you will have access to free tutoring services and other special online resources to help familiarize you with the online classroom and position you to be a successful student.

Asynchronous. Students can log in to their classes at any time and from any location where they have internet access. Assignments are still due on specific days and times, and students must log in to class and participate in discussions as part of their grade, but there are no guidelines around the time of day this must take place.
Interactive. Students engage not only with the lecture materials, assignments and readings, but also with each other, through focused, facilitated discussions. Participation is an integral part of the learning process. Students earn weekly participation grades based upon the quality of their responses to weekly assignments, including discussion questions so understanding how participation works and the posting process is an important component for success.
Student-Centered. Students develop their own capabilities and talents using many informational sources, including lectures, readings, life experience, projects, and group discussions. The facilitator aids the process by addressing student needs, interjecting their industry experience, and providing direction to create a unique learning experience for each student.

If you are a new or prospective student interested in learning more about the online course option at your campus, talk with your Admissions Representative or a designated campus official about the requirements to enroll.
