Summer Carnival a huge hit for The Art Institute of Austin

Back summer carnival

Student Appreciation events on campus have become the expected norm for the past few quarters, but this Summer 09, Student Appreciation went to the next level. Students, faculty, staff, families and approximately 40 children from the Texas Baptist Children’s Home joined The Art Institute of Austin Student Government for an afternoon and evening of fun and entertainment.  One of the children was quoted as saying, “this has been the best day of my life.”

The children enjoyed table-top games (Photography Club), a bungee run (Student Government), basketball (Game Club) and a fashion relay.  The Interior Design Student organization did cotton candy (they had more on themselves than the sticks) and competed for customers with the delicious snow cones made by The Comic Book Society.  Street Art Club sold fortune franks and made over $50.00 for Heroes of Charity. Film Club had popcorn and lots of candy rounded out our food selections.  Fashion Club’s fashion relay brought out the children’s competitive nature and everyone at the carnival had some type of face paint by the end of the day.

CHAT (Celebrating Hispanic Arts and Traditions) sponsored a jalapeño eating contest to the delight of on-lookers.  The “hot” contest was won by Tomara Clark with Kyron Nash a very close second.  Chris Joslin read tarot cards for those brave enough to peak at their future and Kim Pluskota took everyone’s picture at our Animal Photo Booth.

The highlight of the evening had to be the Open Mic Contest under the direction of Audio Club.  Over 10 different student performances filled out a musical billing that could only be duplicated at Austin City Limits (seriously, our students are that talented).  The competition ended in a tie between FBC (a rap/gospel trio) and the Travis Carlisle Band (Caribbean flair).  Each of the winning groups will receive a recording session conducted by Audio Production instructor – Julie Schlembach.

Check out photos of the event on our TV screen and in our newsletters. A video of the event will also be available shortly. And look for an announcement for our Fall Twilight Concert in October.

See you back in class on October 5, 2009!
