MM230 - Audio for Multimedia
Instructor: Jay Rinaldi

Goal: This course explores the tools and techniques used for creating, designing and optimizing sound for a variety of multimedia products such as CD-ROMs, web pages, kiosks, and others. Students learn the fundamentals of digital editing software, audio compression tools, and Internet audio solutions. Streaming audio technologies are also discussed.

Assignment: The final project in MM230 (Audio for Multimedia) is to create the audio track for a provided 2-3 minute video or animation. The concept here is to create a mood, setting or "story" that surrounds the visual material. The students then find and edit appropriate music (some choose to create their own compositions) in Pro Tools and create all the sound effects needed to match the on screen actions. Using the college's extensive sound effects library's the students are required to create "unique" or customized SFX (sound effect). This is accomplished by selecting. mixing and editing 3 or more of the stock sounds from the libraries to create one new never before heard sound effect. (About 70 percent of the up to 37 sounds effects for this piece are required to be "unique".

The final stage of this assignment is to compress both the video and the audio info a format suitable for Internet streaming. This MP4 is designed to stream smoothly over a 384 Kilobit per second modem, although it is also playable by 256 Kilobit per second users as well, they might experience some "lagging" or "jitter".
