In the first year, you'll begin your design education with classes in Fundamentals of Design, Concept Development and Drawing, and then continue to build design foundation through Illustration, Typography and Digital Photography. The program delves into important schools of thought with Art History, and History & Analysis of Design. You will sharpen your digital skills with classes in Digital Imaging, Digital Illustration, Electronic Design and Web Design and further develop skills with specialized classes in advertising, marketing, packaging, corporate communications, media graphics and printing. You will get to experience life as a graphic designer with an internship at a design studio, advertising agency, or in-house corporate design department in the greater Boston area. Also, qualified students can sign up for the Graphic Design Studio and work with not-for-profit organizations to create promotional materials from concept to print.

Being a designer means being aware of the world at large. Challenging classes such as Humanities, Communications, Social Sciences, Physical Science, Math and English will provide you with the knowledge needed for an entry-level position in graphic design.

During your time at The New England Institute of Art, you can expect to draw pages and pages of thumbnails and roughs, meet strict deadlines for projects, and analyze the work of your peers through group critiques. The program offers daily immersion in design through intensive homework projects, lectures, field trips, seminars and workshops.

There are many opportunities for students to enter their work in contests sponsored by The New England Institute of Art or to display their work in the Institute's art gallery.

By graduation, you will possess the knowledge and skills needed for an entry-level position in Graphic Design.

General Description and Program Objective
The New England Institute of Art offers a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design. The degree program lasts eight semesters and contains 130 credit hours, including 40 credit hours in General Education. The objective of the program is to help you attain a fundamental basis in graphic design, including an introduction to the theory and practice of print production, electronic publishing techniques, illustration media for advertising and promotional campaigns, and Website authoring.

Method of Instruction
Instructional methods at The New England Institute of Art include lectures, demonstrations, labs, one-on-one tutorials, and periodic examinations. Except for internships and field trips, all instruction is conducted in a classroom setting.

Graduation Requirements
To receive a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design, students must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours with 40 credit hours in general education courses with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Also, students must receive a passing grade or credit for all required course work, meet portfolio or other requirements, complete a 120-hour internship or capstone project, and satisfy all financial obligations to The New England Institute of Art.
