The Photography associate's degree program at The New England Institute of Art is a commercial photography program based in the digital domain. Students start with the basics: learning to determine exposure, composition, and lighting. Students work with digital cameras, digital imaging and color management software, and digital printers to master a professional work flow. Students work in such photographic specialties as photojournalism, portraiture, advertising, fashion, and architecture. Students execute assignments both in the studio and on location. Students specialize in editorial, advertising, portraiture, and event photography, and graduates are prepared for entry-level positions such as photographic technician, photographer's assistant, digital-imaging artist, product or still-life photographer, newspaper or editorial photographer, or as a photo re-touch professional. Graduates may work in a studio, or at advertising agencies, publishing houses, photo labs or production companies, newspapers, and magazines, or as freelancers.
The associate's degree program is distinguished by its program competencies. The following are program competencies for associate's degree students:- Learn camera handling skills with an emphasis on the use of the view camera to control the plane of focus and perspective;
- Develop the ability to correctly expose black and white and color film for reproduction purposes;
- Understand additive and subtractive color theory;
- Develop proficiency in black and white digital processing, printing, and digital color printing;
- Apply the principles of design and composition to commercial photography to enhance creative potential;
- Acquire an appreciation of the history of art and photography;
- Gain proficiency in location and studio lighting using electronic flash and tungsten lighting;
- Demonstrate skills with the tools of digital imaging including image manipulation and page layout software, digital cameras, scanners, and printers;
- Use acquired conceptual and technical skills to define personal photographic style while preparing an entry-level portfolio within a chosen area of specialty;
- Establish, promote, and manage a business in commercial photography, while developing a sense of business and personal ethics;
- Determine a career track.
