Kable Lyall of Wilkesboro, a 7th-quarter Bachelor of Arts degree student in Graphic Design, won the top prize of $200 – as well as a third-place, $75 prize in The Art Institute of Charlotte’s Mental Ink 2009, a juried graphic design show.
Lyall’s winning design was a series of four digital prints called “Disappearing People,” intended as part of a campaign to help the homeless. Each of the four pieces features circles imposed over the face of a homeless person. He also won 3rd place with a digital “Maserrati” poster.
Second place went to Amy Quesinberry with a mixed media portrait called “James,” and Amanda Fincher of Monroe won a special Faculty Merit Award with a digital print, “Cold Shower.”
This was the second Mental Ink juried show presented by Graphic Design students at The Art Institute of Charlotte. The show will remain on exhibit through April 30 in the atrium at Amelie’s French Bakery in Charlotte’s historic NoDa arts district. About 100 guests attended the opening reception and awards presentation Friday night.
Jurors for Mental Ink were Carolyn Colonna, president of AIGA Charlotte, and Ryan Drye, a Graphic Design graduate of The Art Institute of Charlotte, who has his own studio.
