June Bartholomew
June Bartholomew is a Math instructor at The Art Institute of Charlotte. She holds a BS
and an MA in education.
Ms. Bartholomew's teaching experiences have ranged from elementary school to college,
working with students of various backgrounds, learning styles and abilities.
She began her professional life in private and public schools in New York and has taught in
vocational schools in South Carolina and community colleges in North Carolina.

Susan Cameron
Susan Cameron has spent 15 years in higher education, including serving most recently as Internship
Coordinator and adjunct instructor of psychology a The Art Institute of Charlotte.
She was an Admissions Counselor at Belmont Abbey College and Al Freiberger University, and
a counselor and Director of of Student Activities at Sandhills Community College. She worked in
development at Elon University and at the McColl Graduate School of BUsiness and the Office of
University Advancement at Queens University of Charlotte. Ms. Cameron also serverd as Director
of Catholic Schools Development for the Diocese of Charlotte in North Carolina.
Ms. Cameron has been involved with the American Heart Association Charlotte Metro Heart Walk
since 2001, is a member of the board of directors of Room at the Inn, and is a memeber of
the Community Advisory Board for the Junior League of Charlotte. She has served on the Staff Appreciation
Committee for the Bank of America Child Care Center, the Fundraising Committee at Selwyn Presbyterian
Child Development Center and on the board of directors for the Women's Resource Center in Burlington, NC.
Ms. Cameron holds a B.A. from Belmont Abbey College and an M.S. from Alfred University.
She is married and has two daughters.

Tom Cooper
Tom Cooper has spent his professional life in the communication field, beginning as a broadcast journalist
a year before graduating from high school and continuing in that capacity for almost 10 years. He also
worked as an official spokesman for public and private agencies and was a sales and marketing representative
for IBM.
In 1978, Cooper was appointed Assistant Press Secretary to Governor Hugh L. Carey of New York. Two years
later, he moved to the Office of General Services, New York's most complex state agency, where he was director
of Public Relations and Public Information for nine years. He also served as a training and education program
developer in the New York Department of Correctional Services.
Cooper was appointed by New York Governor Mario Cuomo to be Executive Director of the State Martin Luther
King, Jr. Commission in 1985, the only fulltime government entity in the US dedicated to programs and activities
related to Dr. King's principals. From it emerged the NY State Martin Luther King Jr. Institute for Nonviolence,
and Cooper became its first Executive Director. Cooper also served as a consultant in Europe including Soviet
and post-Soviet Union Russia, Lithuania, Czechoslovakia, Germany and Sweden.
He holds a Master's degree in social policy and a bachelor's in public administration.

Van Hawkins
Van Hawkins is an adjunct instructor of mathematics at The Art Institute of Charlotte. He also has taught
marketing and business courses at The Art Institute.
Hawkins had a long career in the chemical and dyes industry with Hoechst Celanese Corp. and one of its
successors, DyStar L.P. Most recently he was Director of Supply Chain for North America and South America.
Earlier in his career, Hawkins was Manager of Finance & Administration and Marketing Services Manager.
Hawkins holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Lenoir-Rhyne College and an MBA from the University
of North Carolina Charlotte.
His interests and activities include hiking, studying nature, fitness walking, sailing, economics, social
and political issues and his church.
From his college days, Hawkins had a desire to teach and said about his teaching, "To study mathematics
is to acquire the foundation of logical thinking and problem-solving for all professional fields and for your
personal life. The importance of competent mathematical thinking is now greater than ever due to the high
complexity of society and technology."
Hawkins and his wife, Donna, live in Belmont with their two children, Jonathan and Lindsey.

Sue Johnson
Sue Johnson has a BFA in Photo-Journalism from Empire State College/State University of New York and a Master's
Degree in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in language and culture from the University of North Carolina at
Charlotte. She has additional Master's credits in graphic design from East Carolina University.
Johnson has worked as a freelance photographer and writer for various newspapers in the New York Metropolitan
area including the Gannett Newspapers, and in the Charlotte area for the Charlotte Post, Charlotte Observer and
The Independent Tribune. She was a stringer for Gannett newspapers, twice-weekly lifestyles columnist, and a
freelance writer for various newspapers in NC and NY.
For more than two years, Johnson worked as a digital photographer for The Richard Petty Driving Experience,
traveling to many different race tracks on the eastern seaboard. Wedding photography has recently been added to
her repertoire as well as theatre photography at The Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, DC.
Johnson teaches English composition, Effective Speaking and Photography at The Art Institute of Charlotte.
In Westchester County, NY, Ms. Johnson was spokesperson for The Toughlove Organization. She has been actively
involved in the Girl Scouts for more than a decade, and she is a singer-guitarist.

Marty Kindall
Marty Kindall is an adjunct Instructor of History at The Art Institute of Charlotte. She also serves The Art
Institute of Charlotte full time as the Transfer of Credit Coordinator in the Academic Affairs department,
working with incoming transfer students, scheduling, and registration.
Ms. Kindall has dual degrees from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas – a Bachelor of Arts in Social
Science, and a Master of Science in Education. She has furthered her studies with post-graduate work at The
University of North Carolina at Charlotte and, most recently, Winthrop University. She teaches World Civilizations
and Survey of U.S. History at The Art Institute of Charlotte.
Ms. Kindall is an author, having had her graduate research, poetry, and short non-fiction published. Her sixth
novel-length manuscript, The Knot, was published in August, 2006 by The Wild Rose Press and was followed up by a
short story in December 2006.
Other interests include basketball and other sports, travel, and spending time with friends and family.

David Merrell
Five days after he graduated from high school in 1979 David Merrell encountered the unique experience of basic
training in the United States Army. Merrell was in the army for four years and was trained as an Air Traffic
Controller.
After the army Merrell tried college at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville for just over a year, but he
chose to put college on hold until he decided what career path to follow. For a while he traveled across the United
States working as a ditch digger, atmospheric control specialist, bartender, furniture painter, and radio news
announcer. Merrell lived in Portsmouth, NH; Orlando, FL; North Chicago, IL; Billings, MT; Seattle, WA; and Pueblo,
CO.
After nine years Merrell found himself in Murray, Kentucky. He attended Murray State University where he got a
Bachelor of Arts with a double major in English and Philosophy and a Master of Arts Degree in American and British
Literature.
Merrell taught various English classes at Murray State University and Murray State Community College for a few
years, and then he decided to start moving again. With no particular destination in mind, he headed east, and,
after four weeks, settled in Charlotte.
Merrell has been an English and English literature instructor at The Art Institute of Charlotte for more than four
years.

Lynn Mooney
Lynn Mooney earned her bachelor's degree in Mass Communications from the Greenlee School of Journalism and
Communication at Iowa State University and since has worked as both a print and electronic journalist.
She spent five years as Broadcast Production Supervisor for the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, responsible
for TV public relations and marketing for the National Historic Landmark, where she won two Telly Awards for
video direct mail campaigns and cable network advertising. She also was a Communications consultant and writer
for Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance, US Division. She has been a free-lance writer/producer for Fox 18 in
Charlotte and a free-lance writer for Greater Charlotte Biz Magazine.
Ms. Mooney teaches English in The Art Institute's College Bound program and coordinates the Academic Support
Center, working as a member of an educational team to develop successful strategies for learning.

Richard Riley
Richard Riley earned his Master's degree in business management from Walsh University and his Bachelor's
from the University of Akron.
He worked in the chemical industrial for BASF Corporation and OMNOVA Solutions for 28 years as senior
chemist, NAFTA Marketing Manager, NAFTA Product Manager, and Corporate Accounts.
Riley was an accomplished Business Development and Marketing Manager with broad-based managerial and
technical experience. As NAFTA Business Development Manager, he was responsible for strategic planning,
marketing activities, coordinating sales efforts, and relationship building at R&D and corporate centers.
As NAFTA Product Manager, Riley was responsible for all paper coating products sold into the NAFTA market
and working with manufacturing, logistics, and customer service to ensure customer satisfaction, efficiencies
and profitability. His responsibilities also included forecasting, financials (P&L), pricing, new product
introduction, and quality.
As a chemist, Riley patented new polymer technology and worked with the carpet, paper, nonwoven, tire,
and auto filter industries. Some of his innovations were published in technical journals. Riley has served
as chairman and co-chairman of the Coating Additives Committee of the Technical Association of Pulp and Paper.
Riley has taught business management, accounting, environmental science, keyboarding and document processing,
and math at The Art Institute of Charlotte, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, CPCC, and York Technical College. He
enjoys playing tennis, travel, computers and sailing.

Keith Thomas
Keith Thomas, an instructor at The Art Institute of Charlotte, is an award-winning journalist, poet, writer
and published author.
He has worked as an assistant professor of mass communication at Barber-Scotia College and as assistant
professor and intern director in the School of Journalism, Media and Graphic Arts at Florida A&M University.
Thomas was a reporter, editor, editorial writer and columnist for several newspapers including The Tallahassee
Democrat, St. Petersburg Times, Miami Herald and Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He was nominated for the Pulitzer
Prize in feature writing in 1986 and was part of a reporting team that was a finalist in the Pulitzer Prize competition
in 1987.
Thomas has a Bachelor's in journalism from Florida A&M University and a Master's in mass communication from
Northwestern University's prestigious Medill School of Journalism. He has written for several magazines, worked
as a film/music critic and served as a weekly commentator on National Public Radio.
He is the co-author of the critically acclaimed book, "Daddy, I Got Chicken Pots: The Humor, Heartbreak and
Adventure of Fatherhood." He also is the author of a 1998 collection of poetry and essays, "Spiders and Angels:
A web of essays and poetry for the soul."
Thomas was appointed by former Florida Governor Lawton Chiles as a charter member and early driving force behind
Florida's Responsible Fatherhood Initiative.

Hosne A. Begum
Hosne Begum, a woman of multiple talents, has an extensive experience in the chemical industry. She is an adjunct
faculty member at The Art Institute of Charlotte, teaching developmental mathematics and environmental sciences.
Previously Ms. Begum taught an extensive variety of math and sciences at New Hope Carolinas in Rock Hill, SC,
and she is an adjunct faculty member at York Technical College in Rock Hill, teaching developmental mathematics,
college mathematics and chemistry.
She also has acquired practical experience in counseling through various child development and volunteer
organizations. While working at New Hope Carolinas she held various counseling positions. Counseling of adults
and adolescents is one of her fields of expertise.
Ms. Begum is an avid reader and enjoys jogging, sewing, and international travel. She is a member of the
American Red Cross and volunteers at local schools.
A native of Bangladesh, Ms. Begum lives with her family in Rock Hill, SC. She is the mother of three daughters.
A frequent traveler to Bangladesh, she specializes in Bangladeshi and Indian cuisines.
Ms. Begum holds an M.S. in Applied Chemistry and a B.S. (Honors) in Chemistry from the University of Dahka,
Bangladesh. She is pursuing a second Master’s in Math Education from Western Governors University.

Nicole Dowsett
Nicole Dowsett is an adjunct instructor teaching Nutrition both in General Education and in Culinary Arts.
She earned a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics at Florida State University and a Master of Science in Public
Health at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Ms. Dowsett is a Certified Health Education Specialist and has been a consultant/researcher for the Mecklenburg
Council on Health & Fitness and for Reach 2010. She is a member of the American Public Health Association and
the American Dietetics Association.
She also has been an Early Childhood educator.
