Audio Production Bachelor Program Rolled Out at The Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago

Back

Chicago, Ill. - Audio production is a powerful part of multimedia, Web, software, film, video and A/V presentations. With new tools for recording, editing and broadcast audio constantly evolving, today's professional audio engineer or producer must have a solid understanding of the basic principles of sound physics as well as knowing how to use the appropriate equipment.

With this in mind, The Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago is launching a Bachelor of Science degree in Audio Production to prepare students to enter this growing field. "Employment of audio and video equipment technicians and sound engineering technicians is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations," according to the U.S. Department of Labor 2006-2007 Occupational Outlook Handbook (http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos109.htm).

"Not only will these workers have to set up audio and video equipment, but they will have to maintain and repair it as well. Employment of broadcast technicians is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2014, as advancements in technology enhance the capabilities of technicians to produce higher quality radio and television programming," the Handbook noted.

Students start with acoustic, musical and electronic audio basics while working with digital computer-based audio recording and editing programs.  The program includes audio recording and post-production classes well as courses in music and studio business.

The program provides a creative, structured environment that encourages, even demands, a combination of hands-on experience and technical knowledge using the kind of equipment used by the industry today.

Graduates of the program are prepared to seek entry-level positions such as audio for video postproduction engineer or mixer; audio software designer/producer; Foley artist, editor, mixer, or recordist; music editor or producer; or sound designer.
