Student work on display at Westfield Old Orchard

Student Steampunk Designs Stay in Spotlight

Chicago Student Steampunk Designs Step Off the Runway and Stay in the Spotlight

Chicago - In March, Chicago audiences were wowed by a movement many had never heard of before. Fashion design students from The Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago created garments and characters inspired by Steampunk for FAME (Fashion and Media Extravaganza), the college's annual showcase of student work.

Those garments may no longer be walking the runway, but starting Saturday, April 25 they'll be on display at Westfield Old Orchard in Skokie. They'll be featured in a space across from Banana Republic right by Starbucks and the shopping center's Koi Pond.

"It is a privilege for Westfield to showcase these talented young students' incredible designs to the North Shore community," said Amy Benson, Westfield's marketing director. "Old Orchard reflects the best there is when it comes to fashion, and who knows, maybe one day our stores will be offering apparel designed by these students."

The students didn't just create Steampunk garments, they created the characters - like Miss Sophornia Silas, an inventor and space traveler and the Honorable Valdora Isanova, the High Chancellor of North Arctica - that wore them.

The term Steampunk denotes works set in an era and world, such as the 19th century or Victorian era, where steam power is still widely used. The movement mixes in fantasy and science fiction utilizing real and imagined technologies.
