Culinary School Restaurant Open to Public
The Spice of Life Café, the student-operated restaurant at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Ohio - Cincinnati, will be open to the public on Thursdays and Fridays during the college's spring quarter, now through June 18. The restaurant, located on the 4th floor of the college's Symmes Township campus (8845 Governor's Hill Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242, just off the I-71 and Fields Ertel intersection) will be open for lunch on Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. and for breakfast on Fridays from 7 a.m. - 9 a.m.
The Spice of Life café features a menu developed by the culinary arts department and is managed and staffed by student hosts/hostesses, servers and chefs. The students operate the restaurant as part of their coursework. Their capstone class, CULA225, Al A Carte Restaurant Kitchen, calls for students to prepare modern and regional American cuisine in a public restaurant. Correct application of culinary skills, plate presentation, organization and timing in producing items off both a fixed-price menu and an á la carte menu are stressed. The principles of dining room service and the philosophy of food are further explored and examined in light of today's understanding of food, nutrition and presentation.
The multi-course lunch menu features appetizers, soups, salads, pastas, sandwiches, entrees and desserts. A sample of the dishes include Beef and Lamb Nori Maki, Curried Lentil Soup, Apple and Cranberry Salad, Pad Thai Pasta, Lobster and Shrimp Roll, Portabella Gratin, Barbecue Brisket, Coconut Cod, Brownie Banana Split and Crème Brule. The breakfast menu features platters, cereals, omelets and specialty plates including Mother and Child, a sunny side egg over fried chicken with sticky rice and ja rich chicken jus lie. No menu items are priced higher than $12.
