THE ART INSTITUTES DESIGN SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

“You Can Create Tomorrow.” That was the theme for this year’s Art Institutes and Americans for the Arts Poster Design Competition. Participants were challenged to capture what the theme means to them in an original poster design using drawing, painting, photography or typography—whatever helped them realize their creative ideas. Competitors didn’t have to be graphic designers with tons of experience. They just had to be interested in seeing how far their creativity could take them.

For high school seniors, the local Art Institutes Poster Design Competitions offered the chance to earn a $3,000 tuition scholarship as a local first place winner. The winner of the national final round of the competition could earn a full-tuition scholarship to an Art Institutes schoolhe/she.

For high school graduates, the local Art Institutes Poster Design Competitions offered the chance to earn a $1,000 tuition scholarship as a local first place winner, and the winner of the national finals could earn a $10,000 tuition scholarship to an Art Institutes school.

I believe that each individual person can make a difference for the future. We all live in our own little bubbles; our own realities of how we want to create the future. Each of these bubbles play a part in the world. They may shine different colors, or have different things going on inside. Some bubbles might be bigger or smaller then others, but they all should be treated equal because they all play a big part in life. There will be struggles in life for everybody, but we must fight through it so we can become stronger and our bubbles won't pop. We need to be encouraged to do what is right, and be lifted up. Bubbles float higher and higher with no limits on where to go, or have anyone to tell them how to float. Even though each bubble is different, they still work together to float towards a brighter future. I have my own bubble in this world, and I am going to make it count. My bubble will help to encourage others to blow new bubbles for the ones that have popped. If I am bumped by other bubbles, I have to make sure that my bubble doesn't go off my destination. The future of my bubble is at my fingertips. My poster shows each individual bubble floating towards a light to escape the dark emptiness of space. Each of the bubbles have a unique futuristic city going about it's everyday life in it's own little space. I tried to paint them so that they look clean, bright, and shiny. My vision was to make people look at this picture and think, "I want my future to look like that!" I thought that it would be neat to have a robot hand representing my hand holding my own future.

Through all of the training and experience I have gained in graphic design, the most important thing I was always taught is to keep advertising simple, easy to read and to leave an impression to the people who see my work. I have studied many advertisements to understand what makes them effective or not. My poster design is intended to incorporate the visual elements of a man and woman with sparkling ideas seeing eye to eye and sharing ideas in order to create a world of endless ideas and to communicate them globally. The background colors of black fading into gray are meant to portray the end of yesterday's era which fade and break into a futuristic element shown by the green grid design, which I have often seen as a means to suggest a futuristic flavor. Using a globe made up of the simple lines and incorporating the colors of dawn give a feel of a "logo" with a star that shows the idea(s) of the man and woman having come together. The wave lines are to show these ideas being projected globally. The stars in the heads of the people display the sparkling ideas while the dotted line shows them seeing eye to eye. Auras around each person suggest the generating vibes of energy, creativity and enthusiasm to make tomorrow possible and continue on. The type style "You can create" is reminiscent of an older but futuristic font while "Tomorrow" uses a LED style to show a digital flavor suggestive of the future trends and creations and the direction of their evolution. Posters and billboards are meant to target and capture the attention of a certain audience and get the point across as quickly and effectively as possible. My purpose of this design was based on this concept and incorporates many elements with the futuristic flavor that shouts, "You can create tomorrow."

Art influences society, and vice versa. At the start of the last century, North America was filled with an unprecedented hopefulness for the future, and faith in humanity. This spirit of optimistic futurism was reflected in the design style Art Deco. The simple, bright images thrust forward and upward, a triumphant declaration of mankind's accomplishments, and potential. This style was a natural choice for this project, as I wanted to capture that spirit of idealism while showing the interplay between art and society.

A single art piece, however, can influence the world just as much as a style or a school of thought. Consider Star Wars, a low budget, personal film that no studio had faith in. Two sequels and three prequels later, and the world today is a much different one than it was in the years BS, (Before Star Wars.) Art styles that shape and represent an era, too, come ultimately from an individual. Any artist's work could become the progenitor for a new way of thinking. And though the world of the future will be different and strange and unpredictable, by changing the way that the present looks, you influence the way that the future looks. You can create tomorrow.

There are three flags on the golden towers in my poster, yet only two flags have visible images on them. This was no accident; the logos of the future are not yet created, and the folded flag teases and dares the viewer to fill in the blanks.

The figures in the foreground of my poster are not Art Deco style. I wanted them to be distinctly rooted in the present, to represent the viewer. They are the "You" referred to by the text banner at the top. It's no coincidence, though, that their colours are much the same as the colours of the land of tomorrow that awaits them. I wanted to show the influence of the artists of the present on the future, by having their very essence used as the paint coating this brave new world.

Keeping the foreground figures in silhouette means that the viewer can project whatever they want onto them, as they have no clear genders or backgrounds. They remain anonymous; a shorthand depiction of people, as they are today, to both contrast against the unknowable yet shown future, and to act as avatars for the artists who will shape it.

Creating art starts with just drawing little doodles and can explode into anything you can think of. It is an amazing thought to think that you can create something from just a blank piece of paper, something that would have never existed without you making it. Tomorrow is just another day to create that art, the art that only you can make. This poster is to show that anything can be made just from the start of doodling on a little paper, and the boundless possibility's that come and take hold while creating the next great thing, tomorrow...

In this piece, l've placed some subtle symbols such as the moon in the night for the coming of tomorrow, with arrows at the feet of the person to show which way you can go; its not always clear and it can take you anywhere, you just have to keep going with it. From there, a robot looming over symbolises the future as it grows and comes forward. A monster show a strange thing to come, and a little little tree that promises to grow into something big.

I wish to have a career in game design. Because when I was young there was only two thing to do around the house. Make art and play video games. After awhile I got better and better in art and have always loved video games. So combining the two sounds like the best thing to do. So I Hope to become one of the people that create the things that I loves. From the idea of the game to every aspect of it, making some thing that I love and a lot of other people will love too.

You can create tomorrow and it can be any kind of tommorrow you want it to be.
