Designers StatementMy design is a depiction of breaking from the norm of an ordinary, humdrum life into one filled with the thrill and excitement of art. The explosive act of jumping through into a better life gives off a powerful feeling and holds great expression showing that life is indeed better with art in it. I wish to be a graphic designer because I’ve always been able to let my imagination get the better of me; it is something that has flowed through me ever since I was a little girl. I would like to pursue the field of graphic design because it is something I love and I know I will be ecstatic to do it for the rest of my life.

Designers StatementWhen asked to add the theme “Life Is Better With Art In It” into a poster, many ideas came to mind but it was very hard to narrow it down to something that I liked and that I thought displayed the theme in the most creative way. After narrowing it down and sketching out some ideas I realized I didn’t like any of them and I also realized how hard this was going to be. Then it hit me: I wanted to apply a student type theme to it.  I thought a school theme would relate to the life of an artistic student. I decided to use one of the chalkboards we have in my graphic design classroom that we use for doodling and brainstorming. I took an actual picture and edited graphics onto it to add the graphic design portion. I got the chalkboard idea from thinking about how often artistic students doodle on papers all the time. I visualized how cool it would be if a student answered a math problem on the chalkboard with an artistic flair. I hope my poster demonstrates an example of how much better life is with art in it and how much more fun you can have by using art in anything you do. As a freshman in high school, I was excited to be involved in a graphic design program that introduced me to the basic elements of design and also the basics of Photoshop. During my sophomore year I took classes for the Illustration and Advertising aspects of design. As a junior, I took a full year course of advanced graphic design. The following summer I attended a summer studio class at The New England Institute of Art in Boston, Massachusetts. This class taught me the basics of animation using the program Flash. As a senior I am taking a full year of independent study for graphic design, allowing me to further my skills and creativity. In addition to my graphic design class this year I am taking art classes including drawing and photography. I don’t see art as work. For me, it is a fascination that I cannot get enough of. That is why I would like a career in graphic design.

Designers StatementThe design I created symbolizes “life is better with art.” The black lifeless tree centered in the middle of the design represents how dull life would be without art. Art is all around us, from different mixtures of spattered pant to a complex cheetah print. The cheetah is designed as a multi-color image because it stands for the mixture of different ethnicity types that take pleasure in art; the splattered paint represents the wonderful beauty within art. I wish to enter the graphic design field because I enjoy working with the different types of applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Illustrator is the main application I work with when it comes to designing a piece of art. I have an aptitude in graphic design that comes to life as I express it in my creations. I also enjoy creating images and giving them a different look and meaning. In the past couple of years in the Graphic Communication Academy I have created plenty of artwork such as cover letters, business cards, posters, logos, fashion magazines and also school completion t-shirt design. Each design was always better than the last. I feel The Art Institute of California - Hollywood will give me the skills and ability to mature my talent in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign as well as photography. I am a fast learner when it comes to graphic design. I have a unique taste in graphics, from making magazine covers to posters. Everyone has a purpose in life. I feel my purpose is to get a message across and give the world what they want in graphic design.  I have been in the Graphic Communication Academy since September of 2006, and will complete the course in June of 2009. What the academy has given me will help me share my vision of art to the world.

Designers StatementMy design incorporates the theme “Life Is Better With Art In It” shown by the little boy spreading the beauty of art through a world that lacks it. This design demonstrates the value of art in creating a better life, as without art life would be dull. I cannot imagine life without color and everything else that is art because art is what makes life beautiful. I have been drawing since before I could walk and as I have gotten older I have discovered new methods to express myself and all are of great significance to me. Being able to study design would help me in pursuing my life-long dream of living for art and by art.

Designers StatementThe design concept for my entry is pretty simple: Art is the door to your soul that allows your imagination to flow freely. I’ve gone through numerous concepts for this scholarship, all were far too complicated, had too many concepts in one poster, and all of them fell short and just didn’t feel right. So, driving home one day, I had an epiphany. I decided to restart my poster, scrap everything, and just let flow my definition of art in a simple yet effective manner.            I want to enter the graphic design field because it is the best method to express myself. I love hand drawn art, but I’m not the best sketch artist or painter. I’m choosing the digital route because of the infinite possibilities that come with it. Nothing can hold me back - except my own imagination.

Designers StatementI truly believe that life is improved when art is introduced and in my poster, I try to express this by contrasting the unsaturated colors of the east and the bright, flamboyant colors to the west. The focal point of the poster is The Art Institutes logo in the upper left- hand corner, which I modeled in a 3D modeling program and traced over with a Photoshop brush. In the center of the piece there is a line of people leading to The Art Institute’s logo, symbolizing a better life. As the people get closer, they become more colorful and exciting. The Art Institutes, for me, would be the same thing as the people in the poster. It would offer me a better life because it is hard to picture myself anywhere else than surrounded by other artists. When in environments such as The Art Institutes, students can feed off of others creativity and the quality of work is much better.

Designers Statement There are three categories that reflect off this piece and the lovely message, "life is better with art in it." The three major categories are beauty, nature and uniqueness.  Art plays a major role in each of these categories, if you sit down and really think about it. When I first attempted to start the project I thought of life, which helped me in the process of conjuring up a vector of a pretty female face figure to represent beauty. What do her thoughts look like? Well, in the poster you see that her thoughts are made of sparkling rainbows and magenta bubbles which were made in Illustrator CS2 and colored in Photoshop. The rainbows represent nature. In nature there's art everywhere, if you see it the way I do. What keeps this unique world running and not into mass destruction? There’s a magic box named “life is better with art in it.” This box works discreetly without any action, but it helps “Burlina’s” world function the right way.  This artistic world is unique, beautiful and full of nature’s surprises, and “Burlina” is happy with her life because she will always have art in it. Why I want to be a graphic designer It is my destiny to emerge as a professional graphic designer. At an early age I realized that I had an excellent photographic memory and that I was particularly aware of signs, posters, textures, shapes, ads, magazines and large billboards that I encountered daily.  I think it’s my destiny to be a graphic designer because so many events in my life have led up to this point where I am writing this statement and am confident that my real passion is for graphic design and that I will pursue a career as an artist. I am grateful that my parents provided me with the privilege of having full access to a computer, where at the age of twelve, I was self-taught in HTML (hypertext markup language). Then I transitioned on to Web designing that then opened the doors to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.  My interest in Web design grew more to graphic design. Soon I had my own online graphic portfolio that was more focused on the art via HTML/Web design. When I say, “I want to be a graphic designer,” I know that I can utilize my skills and degree in a multitude of applications.    Graphic design is an integral part of every subject that can be converted into different areas such as magazine art, printing, poster design, illustration, digital design and many more.  I love that I can take ideas from my everyday life, thoughts, dreams and premonitions and transform them to a visual - and not only a visual on paper or the computer screen, but any shape, size, form or dimension.  I know in my heart I want to keep doing this for the rest of my life and that it will be possible with the direction and experience I gain at The Art Institute.

My theme for this poster design is packing up your things and taking a trip to let your imagination run wild. Life would be so blurry without art in it. Art is my escape from the world and everyday tensions. I can be free and let my imagination free on the back roads of creativity.

I want to enter a career that allows me to express my artistic personality in any way possible. I believe whether I'm involved in graphic design, digital media or even musical endeavors, I will be happiest in an artistic career field. My “Life is better with Art in it” poster design was inspired by a television commercial. The commercial was advertising paint for interior purposes and the paint bucket tipped over, spilling paint. Soon after the commercial I came up with different images for the poster competition. I had the paint buckets tilt and spill out paint to fill up the letters “A” and “T” to show that without paint or color the word is empty and plain like the letter “R.” The word “Art” also has a drop shadow to help show that the letters were once plain like a picture in a coloring book until the paint flowed into the other letters. In the word “Life” I used a drop shadow and other effects to show that the word has a lot of life in itself. The word has a glittering effect to it, as life does to me. Life, as it is now, is full of different types of art so the word could be used in any way, but this is how I would like to express the meaning of life by using art. In the words “is better with” and “in it,” I decided to use a type font that would make the words look as if they were written quickly with a paint brush. I also made the words italic so it would add some style to them so they wouldn’t appear plan. As my background I used spots of color to help bring out the other colors in the poster. I like slash art, so I decided to make the art as my background.            I had so much fun designing this poster and I will take any other opportunity to design another one or design something for another project. I hope to pursue not only knowledge in graphic design but also in media arts and animation. These areas of art are the most interesting to me and I enjoy every moment to get to design something in graphics.
