[DENVER, CO, September 16, 2009] – The Art Institute of Colorado Photography Student Mallory Olenius was chosen as one of two recipients of the 2009-2010 Photographic Society of America (PSA)/ EDMC Education Foundation Photography Scholarship.

Olenius submitted several images to the competition, including four captured at a 4th of July event during her recent internship with the Greeley Tribune and others from a photo essay of a small town in Southwest Iowa.

A photojournalist by trade, Olenius works not only with the Greeley Tribune, but has also had her work published in several Colorado newspapers, including the Denver Post. She recently finished a major multimedia presentation on intense weapons training for soldiers leaving for Iraq and Afghanistan, at Fort Guernsey, Wyoming.

Art Institute of Colorado Photography Academic Chair, Frank Varney, said that Olenius has not let anything stand in her way in her quest to become a photojournalist. “Her personal motto as a photojournalist is to, ‘know the unknown, and understand the misunderstood.’ In this regard, she has shown a passion and dedication unusual for someone her age,” Varney said.

Olenius will receive a $3,300 scholarship to further her study of photography at The Art Institute of Colorado. Sarah Miller (The Art Institute of Houston), another PSA/EDMC 2009-2010 Scholarship recipient, will also receive a $3,300 scholarship.

The work from Olenius and Miller was selected as exemplary from a pool of 25 applications from various Art Institutes schools. The criteria used to select these recipients included:  academic standing, community involvement, financial need, personal essay, including a demonstrated passion for the art, recommendations and quality or potential of photographic work.

Olenius said she was pleasantly surprised at the scholarship win. “It is really an honor to receive this award from the PSA,” she said.
