Alumni Success Stories

Tom Benway (Multimedia 2004)

JOB TITLE:
New Media Developer / Interface Designer Nine Systems Englewood, CO

Nine Systems is the 2nd largest company in the nation specializing in streaming media applications.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Creates interfaces and connect streaming video/audio applications for clients such as the NBA, NHL, Amazon.com, PGA, ESPN and Atom Films

THE ROAD TO SUCCESS:
“I was hired for my first job through my online portfolio. The experience I gained through working and running my own business during school gave me a long list of projects to show. The professional quality of my work and experience I gained along the way was exactly what they were looking for.”

ADVICE FOR STUDENTS:
“Get as much experience as you can get your hands on, even if it’s a low paying gig or a freebie from a friend. I got started making sites for bands for $500 each and it grew into a full-scale business. The more work you can show people you’ve accomplished, the more you can show them that you know how to get a job done. You can also take away all sorts of experience in developing new ideas and solving problems.”

“Learn how to be organized. Chances are you’ll end up working with a group of people and being able to supply them with what they need to get their part done in an easy manner makes everyone’s lives easier. Label and sort everything you use! Besides, you never know when you’ll come across something you can re-use.”
