Art Institute of Colorado Photography Students Capture Essence of Montrose, CO

Return to Our Main News Page

[DENVER, CO, October 5, 2010] – Art Institute of Colorado Photography students spent a few days out of the summer capturing the beauty and charm of Colorado’s Montrose region.

Over a period of two and a half days, 32 students from the Summer 2010 Landscape Travel Special Topics course traveled to the Montrose region to photograph its people, wildlife and other nuances. The resulting images center on the Black Canyon, and also illustrate the lifestyle of the area’s inhabitants and local recreational opportunities, as well as some of its heritage.
Dave Neligh, Photography Instructor for the class, said he chose the area because it has such a diverse range of interesting subjects, with both an established community and a bourgeoning future.

A project sponsored by The Montrose Association of Commerce and Tourism, the resulting images will be used for the association’s advertising materials, including a full page in the Official State Vacation Guide, as well as the Visitor’s Guide for Montrose. The photographs will also be used to update the association’s Web site, www.visitmontrose.com.

“Montrose is a multi-faceted city and the photography students from the Landscape Travel Special Topics class captured its beauty, essence and spirit in their work.  We are focused on creating a positive economic impact on our community through the use of strong imagery and our brand promise,” Jenni Sopsic, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the Montrose Association of Commerce and Tourism, said.

She said that by featuring these images in the association’s advertising, she hopes to inspire people to visit the region.

“For many students, this is their first opportunity to work with a real client with real needs, whose photos will be published and whose overall impact will be a positive one on the area. We’re helping this community,” Neligh said.
He said the students have received tremendous optimistic feedback from both Art Institute of Colorado faculty and members of the Montrose community.

The collection of images will be on display in The John Jellico Gallery at The Art Institute of Colorado from November 29, 2010 – January 21, 2011.
