International Students

International applicants must present evidence of graduation through an official educational transcript, along with a translation into English, if necessary, that accurately reflects courses taken and related grades/evaluations for all educational programs attempted. Those courses must be at least the equivalent of the standard 12-year primary and secondary school program provided in the United States.

  • All international applicants to The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale (AiFL) must meet the same admissions standards as other students (see Admissions Policy). Additionally, international students must demonstrate competence in the English language. AiFL offers English language courses as part of its commitment to serve the international student. It is the goal of AiFL that a student who is placed into the Language Studies (LS) coursework will, upon successful completion of that coursework, possess the necessary skills to enter English Composition (ENC1101).
  • All applicants whose first language is not English or who come from non-English-speaking countries (i.e., from countries in which English is not the official language, including Puerto Rico) will be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or Michigan English Language Proficiency (MELP) test, with a few exceptions. The purpose of these tests is to identify the appropriate level of English proficiency held by the applicant. The test results will determine if the student must complete LS courses and the number and type of courses.

All students taking LS coursework may also be scheduled for traditional coursework, excluding select General Education courses, within the chosen program of study. All LS courses require students to earn a “C” or better grade to successfully complete the course. Any performance below a “C” results in failure, and the student is required to retake the course.
To enroll please submit:
  • application/enrollment agreement and affidavit of support - sponsor's statement of financial support showing the amount indicated on the INS Form 1-20
  • application fee, tuition deposit, and official copies of all educational transcripts and diplomas
  • confidential statement of financial resources such as bank certification confirming statement of support
  • proof of English proficiency at a minimum level of TOEFL 470 or its equivalent
  • proof of birth date and country of citizenship, such as a photocopy of birth certificate or passport
  • approved English translations of non-English transcripts or documents
  • other items as noted in the college catalog.

After receiving the above, you will be sent an application for a student visa (INS Form I-20). We are authorized under federal law to enroll non-immigrant alien students. All full-time international students must enroll in a student insurance plan or provide an insurance waiver card documenting comparable coverage before you can be unconditionally accepted and start classes.
