The Library: Services

The Library staff offers students and employees at The Art Institute of Houston a diverse range of services, to help them locate and evaluate the information they need for academic and professional purposes.

CIRCULATION
The Library contains materials in a variety of formats. Library resources are selected based on their ability to support the curricula taught at The Art Institue of Houston and meet the general needs of both students and employees.

The collection comprises approximately 28,000 books, 1,700 videos, 200 journals, four databases and 850 discs containing imagery files, sound files and software tutorials. Students and alumni may borrow as many as five items at one time. The borrowing period for books is two weeks and for discs is five hours. Videos and DVDs may be viewed in house. Library patrons must bring materials to The Library in order to renew them.

ONLINE CATALOG
The Library's collection can be searched remotely through the online catalog.

INTER-LIBRARY LOAN
The Library has borrowing agreements with the Southwest Campus of Houston Community College, as well as the other Art Institute locations. It also provides inter-library loan services. If a student or employee would like to request a book or article that is not in The Library, contact msommerfeld@aii.edu

LIBRARY INSTRUCTION
The Library's librarians offer specialized bibliographic instruction to individual library patrons and to groups. This instruction may be organized in the form of an orientation session or workshop. Recent workshops include "Intelligent Web Searching" and "How to Locate Interior Design Resources."

Students are also encouraged to visit the librarians whenever they commence a research project. The reference specialist will help them quickly locate quality materials. To schedule a visit with the reference specialist, click here.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT
The Library staff will locate information in any subject for The Art Institute of Houston's students and employees. Those seeking information may e-mail questions to the staff, or call 1.713.353.4142 or stop by.

TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES
The Library houses twenty-seven computer stations for patron use. Six PCs provide access to the online catalog, the Internet and some Microsoft Office products. Twenty-one G4s provide access to the online catalog, the Internet and software utilized in design classes, such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere. Both printing and scanning services are available to library users.  Access to coin operated photo copiers is also available.
