The Art Institute of Indianapolis Expands to Accommodate Growing Enrollment

The Art Institute of Indianapolis is expanding their school to accommodate a rising number of students and staff. In 2006 The Art Institute opened its doors at The Pyramids with 64 students, 25 employees, and 28,500 square feet. Today the numbers are nearly 900 students, over 150 staff and faculty, and 48,000 square feet.

The addition of the second floor in Pyramid Two will add necessary facilities. Construction has begun on the second floor of Pyrmaid Two to add 6,900 square feet for offfices, classrooms, specialty labs and student gathering space. Currently the school occupies the first and second floors of Pyramid One as well as the first floor of Pyramid Two.

A fully equipped photography studio and new sewing and a flat pattern lab along with a new, larger student lounge will be half of the build out. The rest will be occupied by office space for the Student Affairs Department. There is space reamaining that is slated for more expansion in 2010.

President Madeleine Slutsky is excited to see the growth during the current economic climate. “It is great to see the growth we have had which demonstrates that we are on the right track with the education we offer,” said President Slutsky. “Our goal is to equip artists with the knowledge and skills to suceed in the fields of commercial art, design, fashion and culinary arts,” said President Slutsky.

The expansion will be done in April of 2009. Construction is being done by Witwer Construction out of Fort Wayne with the help of many local trades. The architect is Mark Pavoni with HFS Architects out of Salt Lake City, UT.
