FAQs

What is a FAFSA?

FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  The (FAFSA) is the standard form used to determine your financial aid eligibility.  Information provided on your FAFSA will be used to determine your eligibility for many financial aid programs including:

  • Federal Grant Programs
  • Federal Loan Programs                                                                        
  • Federal Work Study
  • Alternative  Loan Programs (determines unmet need)
  • Cal Grant Programs (Apply by March 2nd with the GPA form)

Do I need to complete a new FAFSA each year?

Yes.  Continuing students receiving financial aid (grants, work study and loans) will need to complete a new FAFSA beginning in January.  Renewal students can apply online: www.fafsa.ed.gov

Are there other grants that I can apply for?

Yes. The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) accepts new Cal Grant applications beginning in January until the March 2nd deadline every year.  Eligibility is determined by CSAC.  Notification of eligibility is administered by the Commission.  For any questions regarding your Cal Grant eligibility or awards, contact CSAC at (888) 224-7268 or via email: studentsupport@csac.ca.gov

What is Cal Grant?

Cal Grant is a state grant. It is awarded to students who meet income and academic eligibility. The best thing of all, the money does not have to be paid back!  Award amounts range from $2,068 to $12,944 per year.

When do I apply for the Cal Grant?

New applicants can apply for Cal Grant by completing and submitting a new FAFSA beginning January 1st through March 2nd along with a GPA form.  Detailed instructions regarding the State Grant program are available in January.  The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) will notify applicants regarding their eligibility usually during the month of April for the upcoming fall term.  For more information, contact the California Student Aid Commission by calling

How do I apply for scholarships? 

The Student Financial Services Office maintains an updated list and websites of available scholarships.  You are encouraged to stop by the office and apply for scholarships that you may be eligible for.

How do I pay for my books?

For the 1st term, most of your books will be provided in your supply kit. After your 1st term, books will be an out-of-pocket expense. You are encouraged to purchase used books and/or supplies from other students, Student Supply Store or the various websites online.

What is the difference between federal and private loans?

Federal student loans (subsidized or unsubsidized) are the most common student loans and available to students with or without financial need.  To receive federal student loan funds, you must be enrolled at least half-time (6 units or more).  Private loans also known as alternative loans are credit based and may have a variable interest rate along with fees.  Interest rates, repayments and fees will vary.

When do I repay my student loans?

Federal Student Loans are repaid in monthly payments, 6 months after graduation or when you drop below half-time.  Details regarding payments and postponement are provided during the Student Loan Entrance Counseling session.

For students with financial need.  The federal government pays the interest while you are school and during the first six months during your grace period.

For all eligible students regardless of income or assets.  You are responsible for paying all the interest that accrues, even while you're in college but you can postpone your payments until you graduate.

When Can I request my refund (stipend)? 

Eligible students can request their refund1-2 weeks after classes begin.  For more details, you are encouraged to contact your Financial Aid Officer.

How do I apply for my VA benefits?

Eligible students can begin the process by calling 800-827-1000 or apply online: www.gibill.va.gov The School Certifying Official (Registrar) would then notify the VA of your enrollment status.  Eligibility is determined by the Veteran Affairs.

How do I apply for a campus job?

Interested students should stop by Career Services located in Suite 150.   You will need to complete an EDMC Employment Application to begin the process.

When do I re-apply for financial aid?

Student Financial Services will contact you to re-apply for financial aid for the next 9-months.  We will send you a checklist of items needed and complete this process at least 30 days before the beginning of your next term.
