Veterans
Your service to our country, as a member of the U.S. armed forces, may make you eligible for a variety of military education benefits such as the GI Bill and others.

Post 9/11 GI Bill
What is it?
The Post 9/11 GI Bill s a new benefit providing educational assistance to individuals who served on active duty on or after September 11, 2001.
Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits are payable for training pursued on or after August 1, 2009. No payments can be made under this program for training pursued before that date.
Who is Eligible?
At a minimum, you must have served at least 30 days of continuous active duty service after September 10, 2001 and be discharged due to a service-connected disability, or served an aggregate of 90 days of active duty service after September 10, 2001, and—
- Be honorably discharged from Armed Forces; or
- Be released from Armed Forces with service characterized as honorable and placed on the retired list, temporary disability retired list, or transferred to the Fleet Reserve or the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve; or
- Be released from the Armed Forces with service characterized as honorable for further service in a reserve component; or
- Be discharged or released from Armed Forces for:
- EPTS (Existed Prior to Service)
- HDSP (Hardship) or
- CIWD (Condition Interfered with Duty); or
- Continue to be on active duty.
Benefit
You are entitled to a percentage, as determined by your length of active duty service, of the following:
- Amount of tuition and fees charged, not to exceed the most expensive in-State undergraduate tuition at a public institution of higher education (paid to school);
- Monthly housing allowance equal to the basic allowance for housing (BAH) amount payable to a military E-5 with dependents, in same zip code as school * (paid to you); and
- Yearly books and supplies stipend of up to $1000* per year (paid to you); and
- A one time payment of $500 may be payable to certain individuals relocation
Yellow Ribbon Program
What Is It?
The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program (Yellow Ribbon Program) is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. This program allows institutions of higher learning (degree granting institutions) in the United States to voluntarily enter into an agreement with VA to fund tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate. Under the agreement, The Art Institute of Las Vegas can waive up to 15% of those expenses and VA will match the same amount as the institution.
Who is Eligible?
Only individuals entitled to the maximum benefit rate (based on service requirements) may receive this funding. Therefore, they may be eligible if:
- They served an aggregate period of active duty after September 10, 2001, of at least 36 months;
- They were honorably discharged from active duty for a service connected disability and they served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001;
- They are a dependent eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill based on a veteran’s service under the eligibility criteria listed above.
Benefit
Benefits are payable for training pursued on or after August 1, 2009. No payments can be made under this program for training pursued before that date.
- The Post-9/11 GI Bill pays up to the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition.
- Student’s tuition and fees may exceed that amount if they are attending a private institution, graduate school or attending in a non-resident status.
- If enrolled at a Yellow Ribbon participating institution and the tuition and fees exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition, additional funds may be available for the education program without an additional charge to their entitlement.
- Institutions that voluntarily enter into a Yellow Ribbon Agreement with VA choose the percentage of tuition and fees that will be waived. VA will match that percentage and issue payment directly to the institution
Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty & Veteran
What is it?
MGIB provides up to 36 months (4 regular school years) of education benefits to eligible Veterans for:
- College, Business
- Technical or Vocational Courses
- Correspondence Courses
- Apprenticeship/Job Training
- Flight Training
Who is Eligible?
- Active Duty members who have served at least two years on active duty.
- Veterans - there are four categories of Veteran eligibility depending on when you enlisted and how long you served on active duty.
Benefit
- Up to $1,073.00 per month for full-time institutional education (effective August 1, 2008).
- Benefits end 10 years from the date of your last discharge or release from active duty.
- You must forfeit $100 / month of your basic pay for the first year of Active Duty. This amount is non-refundable.
Montgomery G.I. Bill - Selected Reserves
What is it?
MGIB provides up to 36 months (4 regular school years) of education benefits to eligible Veterans for:
- College, Business
- Technical or Vocational Courses
- Correspondence Courses
- Apprenticeship/Job Training
- Flight Training
Who is Eligible?
- Six-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve, signed after June 30, 1985.
- Officers must agree to serve six years in addition to their original obligation.
- High school diploma/GED.
- Complete initial active duty training.
- Maintain Selected Reserve Status.
Benefit
- MGB SR Chapter benefit is worth over $11,000.
- Amount is based on 2008-2009 full-time student payment rate of $329 multiplied by 36-month limit.
- Payment rate automatically increases on October 1 each year.
Loan Repayment (LRP) and Tuition Assistance (TA) Programs
What is it?
Your service may partially or fully repay college loans.
Who is Eligible?
- Generally for enlisted members only.
- Several factors determine your eligibility, including your branch, your Military Occupational Specialty, and terms of your contract.
- Your loans must be in good standing, i.e. not in default.
Benefit
- Repayment program information is specialized depending on your branch of the military.
- There are also specialized loan repayment programs for health professional officers. Please see your education officer for details.
Tuition Assistance "Top-Up" Program
What is it?
An additional benefit intended to supplement other tuition assistance programs such as the G.I. Bill. The benefit is available for all courses that began on or after October 30, 2000.
Who is Eligible?
- To be eligible for the Top-up benefit, the person must be approved for federal Tuition Assistance by a military department and be eligible for MGIB-Active Duty benefits.
Benefit
- The amount of the benefit is limited to the amount that the person would receive for the same course if regular MGIB benefits were being paid.
Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program (DEA)
What is it?
Education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of certain veterans. May be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeship, and on-the-job training.
Who is Eligible?
• You must be the son, daughter, or spouse of a service member who died, is missing, or was permanently disabled while on duty or as a result of a service-related condition.
Benefit
• DEA reduces your tuition amount - you may pay three months' instead of six months' tuition, for example.
The Art Institute of Las Vegas
The Art Institute of Las Vegas is approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the training of veterans and eligible veterans’ dependents.
Students sponsored or assisted by the Veterans Administration may receive assistance from the Admissions Department in the filing of appropriate forms. These students must maintain satisfactory attendance and academic progress (see policies section of the catalog for more information). Students receiving veterans' benefits must report all prior education and training before attending The Art Institute of Las Vegas. The Art Institute of Las Vegas will evaluate prior credit and accept that which is appropriate. The time to complete the program and the total tuition will be reduced proportionately and the US Department of Veterans Affairs will be notified.
Service members Opportunity Colleges
The Art Institute of Las Vegas is a member of Service members Opportunity Colleges, a consortium of national higher education associations that functions in cooperation with the Department of Defense, the military services (including the National Guard), and the Coast Guard to help meet the voluntary higher education needs of service members. Cooperating in cooperation with the U.S. Army Recruiting Command, this consortium includes more than 1500 participating SOC colleges and universities that have agreed to accept for admission new Army and Army Reserves recruits at the time of their enlistment in the service. There is a limited number of a scholarship for dependents of active duty servicemen.
