An international student seeking to enroll at Miami International University of Art & Design must submit each of the following items:
- A completed and signed Application for Admission form, including a 150 word essay.
- A completed and signed Enrollment Agreement.
- A U.S. $50.00 non-refundable application fee and a U.S. $100.00 enrollment fee in United States currency.
- Original or official copies of educational transcripts (secondary school or university level academic records). Transcripts must be prepared in English or include a complete and official English translation.
- Proof of English language proficiency or enrollment in the University's English as a Second Language (ESL) coursework. (See below for acceptable standards.)
- Official bank statements that verify sufficient funds to cover the cost of the educational program as well as all living expenses.
- A completed and signed sponsor's statement of financial support (not required if the student is self-sponsored).
- Photocopy of valid passport to provide proof of birth date and citizenship. If student has not applied for a passport, a copy of student's birth certificate must be submitted.
- Proof of health insurance. (International students who do not possess health insurance upon applying to Miami International University of Art & Design must be prepared to purchase health insurance through an approved University provider upon commencement of studies.)
All international students must demonstrate competence in the English language by meeting one of the following criteria:
- Graduation from a secondary or postsecondary institution in which the primary language of instruction was English or
- For the associate- and bachelor-level applicants, a minimum score of 500 on the written TOEFL, 173 on the computer TOEFL; for the master-level applicants, a minimum score of 550 on the written TOEFL, 213 on the computer TOEFL.; or an equivalent level of English proficiency as established by Miami International University of Art & Design standards.
- Undergraduate (associate and bachelor level) applicants may also satisfy the minimum standard of English language proficiency by submitting:
- Proof of successful completion of a minimum of two semesters or quarters of post-secondary coursework in which English was the language of instruction.
- Satisfactory completion of English 101 or 102 at an English-speaking college or university within the USA, achieving grade 'C' or better.
Please Note: Applicants should contact the Admissions Office to determine other examinations for which official scores, equivalent to TOEFL, are acceptable as an alternative to TOEFL.
International students who do not have proof of English language proficiency and/or do not qualify for one of the above listed criteria have the option to enroll in English as a Second Language (ESL) coursework offered in cooperation with one of the University's language school partners until the necessary English language skills are acquired.
Following an admissions review by the University staff, an international student who is eligible for admission, but has not met the English proficiency requirement will be referred to a language center. The language center will conduct placement testing and, when necessary, recommend the appropriate language courses. The student will be issued an I-20 form by the University, stating: "English as a Second Language coursework for Miami International University of Art & Design will be administered by ESL Language Centers in conformity with Miami International University of Art & Design/ESL Language Centers Agreement."
Miami International University will maintain full authority for the academic, financial, and administrative needs of the student. The Language Center will administer necessary placement exams, determine appropriate English courses for each student, and notify Miami International University of Art & Design of each student's program completion date.
If an international student is transferring from a college or university in the United States, the following information is also required:
- A copy of the current F-1 student visa
- A copy of the front and back of the I-20 form issued by the previously attended institution
- A copy of the I-94 form from the student's passport
- The International Student Transfer Form
If the applicant is accepted, the student will be sent an I-20 form, and further information concerning the transfer process will be provided. The University is authorized under federal law to admit non-immigrant alien students.
INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT
The International Affairs Department's primary function is to provide resources and assist international students with all issues pertinent to their transition into the United States. The international student advisors also serve as the Designated School Official (DSO) for the Department of Homeland Security - Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services. Additionally, the Department provides the following services:
- International student orientation
- Advising on student visa, I-20, passport, and immigration issues
- Employment and graduation seminars for nonimmigrant students
- International Student Handbook
- General information on diverse matters such as driver’s licenses, Social Security, and taxes
- Activities and cultural events for international and domestic students
- Weekly electronic updates on information and events pertinent to international students
- Study abroad opportunities for international and domestic students
