MFA Visual Arts Exhibit Touches on the Human Condition

This semester’s Master of Fine Arts, Visual Arts Gallery exhibit features the signature works of three graduating artists: Frank G. Kanelos, Chrisa Tatakis and Rebeca Gilling.

The artists’ styles, though quite different, have undertones that challenge traditional societal norms. Rebecca Gilling’s exhibit explores techniques used in creating ceramic animals with human features and underlying qualities challenging the conventional. “Trophies,” her full wall piece delves into the role of women as both powerful and weak.

In contrast, Chrisa Tatakis’ exhibit explores the human reality of dealing with and overcoming turmoil in three Tryptichs: “Past I, II, III,” “Present I, II, III,” and “Future I, II, III.” She explores the turbulent times signifying her situation at the time of their creation.

The multimedia exhibit by Frank G. Kanelos also presents the human struggle for survival in his piece, “Scratching to Survive.” Additionally, he explores the continuity of life through the sights and sounds of water from Miami’s various bodies of water.

The exhibit opened May 3rd and runs through May 23rd in the Main Gallery at Miami International University of Art & Design, 1501 Biscayne Blvd. The gallery is open to the public at no charge from 8am – 8pm Monday – Saturday.
