Applicants seeking to enroll in valid non-immigrant student status at Miami International University of Art & Design must submit each of the following items:
- A completed and signed written Application for Admission form, including a 150 word essay.
- A completed and signed enrollment agreement.
- A U.S. $50.00 non-refundable application fee and a U.S. $100.00 enrollment fee (submitted in U.S. currency)
- Original or official copies of all educational transcripts (high school and if applicable, university level academic records) and diplomas. Transcripts must be prepared in English or include a complete and official English translation. Credentials of non-American educational systems need to be prepared and submitted by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES); see www.naces.org. We prefer that you use WES to have transcripts evaluated from foreign countries for course equivalencies. There is a fee associated with the use of WES for official credential evaluation services.
- Proof of English language proficiency or enrollment in the University's English as a Second Language (ESL) coursework. (See below for acceptable standards.)
- Official bank statements that verify sufficient funds to cover the cost of the educational program as well as all living expenses.
- A completed and signed sponsor's statement of financial support form (this form is not required if the student is self-sponsored).
- Photocopy of the student's valid passport to provide proof of birth date and country of citizenship. If student has not applied for a passport, a copy of student's birth certificate must be submitted.
- Proof of health insurance. (International students who do not possess health insurance upon applying to Miami International University of Art & Design must be prepared to purchase health insurance through an approved University provider upon commencement of studies.)
All international students must demonstrate competence in the English language by meeting one of the following criteria:
- Graduation from a secondary or postsecondary institution in which the primary language of instruction was English or;
- For the associate- and bachelor-level applicants, a minimum score of 500 on the written TOEFL, for the master-level applicants, a minimum score of 550 on the written TOEFL; or an equivalent level of English proficiency as established by Miami International University of Art & Design standards.
- Undergraduate (associate and bachelor level) applicants may also satisfy the minimum standard of English language proficiency by submitting:
- Proof of successful completion of a minimum of two semesters or quarters of post-secondary coursework in which English was the language of instruction.
- Satisfactory completion of English 101 or 102 at an English-speaking college or university within the U.S., achieving a letter grade 'C' or better.
Please Note: Applicants should contact the Admissions Office to determine other examinations for which official scores, equivalent to TOEFL, are acceptable as an alternative to TOEFL.
International students who do not have proof of English language proficiency and/or do not qualify for one of the above listed criteria have the option to enroll in English as a Second Language (ESL) coursework offered in cooperation with one of the University's language school partners until the necessary English language skills are acquired.
Following an admissions review by the University staff, an international student who is eligible for admission, but has not met the English proficiency requirement will be referred to a language center. The language center will conduct placement testing and, when necessary, recommend the appropriate language courses. The student will be issued an I-20 form by the University, stating: "English as a Second Language coursework for Miami International University of Art & Design will be administered by ESL Language Centers in conformity with Miami International University of Art & Design/ESL Language Centers Agreement."
Miami International University of Art & Design will maintain full authority for the academic, financial, and administrative needs of the student. The Language Center will administer necessary placement exams, determine appropriate English courses for each student, and notify Miami International University of Art & Design of each student's program completion date.
All non-immigrant applicants transferring from another U.S. College or University or language school in the U.S., must submit the following:
- A copy of the current F-1 student visa page;
- A copy of the front and back pages of the I-20 form issued by the previously attended institution;
- A copy of the I-94 form from the student's passport;
- The International Student Transfer Form.
Upon acceptance, an F-1 transfer student must ensure the proper transfer of their SEVIS records are done electronically from the current/previous school to: the Miami International University of Art & Design. Schools often require a direct request from the student, plus a copy of an acceptance letter from the Miami International University of Art & Design, before transferring the SEVIS record. Please note: this step is in addition to completing the International Student Transfer Clearance Form.
INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT
The International Affairs Department's primary function is to provide resources and to assist international students with all issues pertinent to their transition into the United States. The international student advisors also serve as the Designated School Official (DSO) for the Department of Homeland Security - Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services. Additionally, the Department provides the following services:
- International student orientation;
- Advising on student visa(s), I-20 issuance and compliance, passport, and U.S. Federal immigration related issues;
- Employment and graduation seminars for non-immigrant students;
- International Student Handbook;
- General information on diverse matters such as driver’s licenses, Social Security, and taxes;
- Activities and cultural events for international and domestic students;
- Weekly electronic updates on information and events pertinent to international students
