Hurricane Preparedness Plan

Students, staff & faculty are encouraged to think ahead to where they can go, should a serious hurricane come to Miami.  Plan now for a place to stay (family, friends, etc.).   Your next option would be a city shelter, which would likely be less comfortable.

Students Hurricane Preparedness Plan

If a Hurricane threatens, all students should do the following:

o Notify their family
o Purchase a battery-operated radio to obtain ongoing emergency information and keep posted on the storm’s
   progress.
o Maintain a full tank of gas once a “Warning” is officially announced.
o Immediately collect water in suitable containers for drinking purposes upon notification that a major hurricane
is approaching (level 3 and above).
o Students are encouraged to familiarize themselves on proper hurricane preparation.  Students can reference the
website, http://www.miamidade.gov/hurricane/. Hurricane guides are available in the Student Affairs Department.
o Obtain information regarding Red Cross sponsored shelter locations.  Shelter location information will be provided
on the radio, on local television reports and through the Student Affairs Department.
o Should you evacuate to an emergency shelter, take only bedding and personal hygiene items, non-perishable food
and a battery operated radio and cellular phone.  If you require medication, be certain that you have enough to

last you for at least one week and be certain to take it with you.  Do your best to keep a few dollars of cash and
some change to make phone calls.

Housing Residents should follow the above procedures in addition to the following procedures:

Note:  Housing Students should contact their RA/RLC for critical instructions regarding safety on property or, if necessary, evacuation.

• Prior to Hurricane season, all students MUST update the Hurricane evacuation form on file with the Residence Life
& Housing office, identifying each resident’s relocation plan in the event of a hurricane.  The office will provide
information to students in Edgewater Hall and proactively discuss in floor meetings.
• In the event the school is closed for a Hurricane Warning, all students will be strongly encouraged to evacuate the
facility and stay with family or friends.
• At the direction of local authorities, Edgewater Hall will close should an evacuation order be issued, and all
residents will be required to evacuate the facility.  Students who have remained in housing will be required to
  evacuate to a designated shelter.
• In the event of an OFFICIAL evacuation order, car pool with other students to a specific Red Cross approved
emergency shelter. Discuss well in advance of an official evacuation order the persons with whom you will car pool.
The Residence Life & Housing Department will arrange either shuttle bus transportation or county bus
  transportation to the designated shelter.

Students should make it a priority to contact their family/friends and keep them to date prior to and immediately following a major weather event.  Encourage family/friends to go to www.aii.edu for up-to-date information.  You can also call - 800-225-9023 (MIU’s 800#).

* If Evacuated, DO NOT return to the University or your residence hall, until an official announcement of re-opening is provided by University administrative personnel.

A Hurricane is a very serious event.  Do not panic, remain informed and follow directions provided by the university.  By being responsible, you will be doing that which is necessary to protect yourself, your property and perhaps, others.
