After working briefly in a restaurant position, Mel realized she needed to fulfill her passion of preparing fabulous food while making people happy and relaxed by her cooking. This realization led Mel along the path to becoming self employed as a Personal Chef, where she prepares meals for people in their homes. This includes cooking food for weekly meals, dinner parties, showers and any type of special engagement. Her personal chef service invites customers to experience all types of cuisine, tailored to fit their taste and dietary needs. Mel enjoys working and interacting with her customers on their specific requests and being able to witness their satisfaction and enjoyment by the food she creates.

Mel offers the advice; “Follow your heart and you will find out what exactly what you would like to do with your career.  It is sometimes not what you originally had planned to do at all!”

 

Elizabeth (Corby) Jossart - Fall 2007

Elizabeth was hired as a graphic designer for Fields Manufacturing because of her positive attitude, good interview skills, and her four-year degree in graphic design. Fields Manufacturing is a Minnesota based supplier in the promotional products industry. From note pads and accessories to lanyards and sunglasses, Fields will add one company’s name and advertising message to any of their supplies. Elizabeth is responsible for generating the artwork for new lanyard orders and ensuring the artwork is printed correctly before the product is shipped to the client. Elizabeth enjoys working with clients and assisting them through the ordering process. She finds it extremely rewarding when her clients are satisfied with their final product.

Elizabeth offers the advice; “Be willing to be flexible with an employer, it goes a long way and may even get you the job. Follow up on where you sent out your resume and samples. By doing this you will most likely get an interview, which will allow you to show the employer what you can do and that you are motivated.”
 

 

Alana Danielowski - Winter 2008

After graduation, Alana began doing contract work for Beasley Photography, where she spent most of her time scanning and retouching large format negatives and fine art.  She also did most of the resizing, web preparation, and printing of the photographs for the company. Through networking with other photographers, Alana was referred to Kendall Photography by past and present employees of Kendall.  As a contract photographer for Kendall Photography, Alana assisted in many aspects of their commercial product photography.  Much of her responsibilities involved keeping track of the day to day production and providing support to the employees of the company. Recently, Alana has been working with multiple photographers as an contract assistant in production, style and portrait photography. She is currently chasing her dream of being a photographer all the way to San Francisco, California, where she plans on continuing her freelance work while preparing to land a full time photography position.

Because of his education, his high attention to detail, and his willingness to learn, Seth was hired as the Production Coordinator for DeWitt Publishing. Seth is responsible for ad placement, ad creation and assisting the art manager with page layouts while also preparing files for the printer. DeWitt Publishing produces a monthly magazine for the auto collision repair industry called FenderBender. What Seth enjoys most about his position at DeWitt Publishing is learning about the magazine production process and working with printing companies.

Seth offers the advice; "Be involved in the design community. Volunteer. Network."

Emma has a remarkable understanding of construction and design because of her previous work experience in an architectural firm, her computer and programming skills, and her degree in Interior Design from The Art Institutes International Minnesota. Emma works as an interior designer at Bartlett Design Company, which designs multi-family apartments and condos, single family homes, environmental centers and museums. From creating concepts for multiple projects to drafting plans and selecting materials and finishes, Emma works in every phase of the design process. Emma truly enjoys visiting the constructed and finished site to see the project that was once on paper come to life.

Emma offers the advice; “Learn that there are so many fabulous avenues you can explore in this degree the possibilities are endless.  Find what interests you most.  Learn more about sustainability, understand your roll in preserving and changing the way we design to not impact our earth but reverse the damage.  Never stop learning and work towards receiving your NCIDQ certificate it will be very important in the future for every designer.  Above all else, love what you do in life, only you can bring yourself happiness.”



Alissa Fedie - Spring 2007

Alissa stood out from other candidates in the hiring process because of her training in many aspects of the kitchen as well as being Serv Safe certified. At the Hilton Minneapolis, Alissa is Cook 1 in the Garde Manger kitchen preparing cold food for banquets. She is responsible for product rotation and maintaining the cleanliness of the kitchen while also completing daily required meal assignments. The Hilton Minneapolis is an upscale full service hotel which includes a ballroom that is ideal for corporate events, weddings and banquets. What Alissa enjoys most about working at the Hilton is the encouragement and training from the talented chefs and the opportunity to utilize her creative talents in carving and arranging centerpieces.

Alissa offers the advice; “The best advice I can give any graduating culinary student is to not be afraid to screw up.  When working in a kitchen full of other professionals, being humiliated can be the best way to learn. You’ll never make that mistake again, but just be sure to learn from them.”

 

Nathan Gassen - Fall 2007

Nathan stood out during the hiring process at McArthur Towel & Sports because of his highly developed portfolio and his background in photography. At McArthur Towel & Sports, Nathan designs graphics for various sporting events including the Super Bowl and World Series. He is also the in-house photographer and takes all of the company’s product shots and then catalogs the photos for their distributors. McArthur Towel & Sports is a Wisconsin based company that designs and distributes athletic towels and sports-related gift items in compliance with professional sports teams. What Nathan enjoys most about his job is the fun and exciting work atmosphere.

Nathan offers the advice; “Make yourself more versatile with your skills.  Learn other things besides design whether that is web or photos or something else.  Right now the job place is over flooded with designers and anything you can do to make yourself more valuable will help you down the road.”

Matt was hired at Wachovia Securities because of his knowledge of HTML and XML and his experience in a variety of computer applications. Wachovia Securities provides personal and business financial services to improve their clients’ existing and potential assets. Matt’s responsibilities include capturing Smart Station screens using SnagIt, editing and updating XML code in Dreamweaver, and applying watermarks using Photoshop. Matt enjoys learning something new every day and using the skills and knowledge that he obtained through his education.

AJ Michels - Fall 2007

AJ began as an intern at The American Academy of Neurology doing basic HTML, CSS, and image manipulation for their website. AJ was then hired as a web developer because he proved in his internship that he was able to learn new skills quickly, gain knowledge about the company, and had the ability to work well with coworkers in order to accomplish company goals. AJ’s primary responsibilities include developing, maintaining and updating web applications on a per request bases. The American Academy of Neurology is an international nonprofit association that was established to advance the art and science of neurology. What AJ enjoys most about his job is being involved in each phase of a project, from concept to completion.

AJ offers the advice; “There is always a better way to do something even if someone above you says there isn't.  The best way to get ahead is to do the things the people before you were not willing or able to do.”

After completing The Art of Cooking Certificate Program at The International Culinary School at The Art Institutes International Minnesota, Thao embarked on her dream of owning her own catering business. With her husband, Thao took her passion for cooking and turned it into an upscale catering company called Green Mangos Catering which features contemporary New American cuisine with Asian influences. Thao works with each client to create a unique menu designed specifically for their event. She completes the proposals, preps and cooks the food, and at times works with her kitchen team in order to successfully execute each event. Thao enjoys using her creativity to transform the menu to reflect what’s in season, what’s trendy or what inspires her. Thao finds it extremely rewarding when her clients continuously hire Green Mangos Catering for future events.

Thao offers the advice; “Don’t put limitations on yourself.  There will be enough people around who will do it for you.  Really think about what inspires you and start putting your ideas together to make your dream a reality!  The only thing standing between you and your dream is you.”
 

Steve Mueller - Winter 2008

Steve stood out in the hiring process at Minuteman Press Print Shop because of his degree in graphic design, his portfolio, and his understanding of the printing process. Minuteman Press Print Shop provides quality print work, professional design and personal service to businesses. As the lead graphic designer, Steve is responsible for the graphic design work for customers, such as logos, corporate identity, invitations, flyers, and brochures. He is also in charge of the typesetting and layout work, handles the digital printing process, and prepares jobs for the offset press. Steve enjoys being able to go beyond the customer’s expectations and helping business become successful. He also enjoys working on multiple projects and meeting new clients.
 
Steve offers the advice; “Pay attention in Print Production class!  Learn the printing process, especially the technical stuff; the design is only the beginning.  You can come up with an amazing eye catching design, but if it doesn’t print, you have nothing.  Learn InDesign, in and out!  Also, make as many contacts as possible, and always be networking.”



Amy Nelson - Winter 2008

Amy was hired as the Creative Production Coordinator at Rockler Companies, Inc. because of her immediate response to the job opening and her education from The Art Institutes International Minnesota. Rockler Companies Inc. is a woodworking supply company that has retail stores across the country along with an extensive online catalog. Amy’s responsibilities include working on the catalog, obtaining artwork for new products, and designing plans for assembly instructions. She also uploads artwork onto the Rockler website and ensures the timeline for the printing process while managing the project deadlines. What Amy enjoys most about her job are her coworkers and working on the production of the catalog.

Amy offers the advice; “Take every opportunity that comes to you, even if it is not exactly what you want.  Also, apply as soon as you see a job posting, because it’s competitive and a lot of employers only accept resumes for a few days.  And don’t be picky, apply to everything.”

In his current position at Martin Ashal, Austin carries the responsibility as the Director of Strategic Development. Martin Ashal helps companies reveal opportunities to create sustainable growth. Austin nurtures this mission by managing business strategies, precise measurement and analytics, and creative execution. Austin leads a diverse group of highly talented, multi-disciplined team members. Austin encourages both critical thinking and constructive competition while also challenging his peers to identify practical uses for innovative ideas.

Since joining the Martin Ashal team, Austin has led his team to a number of outstanding achievements. Recently, his team guided a legal client to a large increase in sales leads, secured business, and direct return on investments.  Other accomplishments include helping secure money for new business development in commercial real estate, and managing the brand strategy for clients ranging from pharmaceutical manufacturing to data archiving.

In the first quarter of 2008, his team developed an online community that generated 115,000 page views a month, 9,000 unique visitors a month, and 2,700+ registered community members to promote an e-book that Martin Ashal was hired to publish and market. 

Austin is also passionate about youth development. He works with multiple non-profits in the education and healthcare sectors.  His advice to be successful is: “Discover your passions, cultivate your strengths, and create opportunities to improve the way we live and serve.”

 

Christine Parra - Spring 2007

Christine was hired as the Assistant Foodservice Director for ARAMARK because of the combination of her degree in Culinary Management, her involvement in the National Guard, and her experience in being a supervisor in a union environment. Christine manages a team of twenty full-time union employees and eighty students. She is also responsible for training new employees, hiring students, organizing daily meals, and organizing prep lists for the upcoming school year. The main focus of ARAMARK is to provide foodservice, facilities management and uniforms to healthcare institutions, universities, stadiums, arenas and many other businesses throughout the world. Christine enjoys interacting and working with employees to solve any work related issues while creating a more efficient work environment.

Christine offers the advice; “Always lead by example. If you can't do every part of your employee’s job then you cannot organize and lead them to a successful outcome.  Also, save all of your work, you will need it for
 

Tom Pedersen - Summer 2007

Prior to his education at The Art Institutes International Minnesota, Tom had ten years of experience working in the printing industry. It was this experience and familiarity with printing, as well as a portfolio that highlighted typesetting and layout skills that helped Tom land the job as a production artist at Norwood Promotional Products. As a production artist, Tom is responsible for preparing the customer’s art files for print. This involves ensuring and modifying the artwork to meet the printing standards and setting the artwork into templates for the printing press. Norwood Promotional Products is a company that produces a wide range of promotional items such as mugs, pens, magnets, etc. What Tom enjoys most about his job is the demand for quality work at a high volume because it pushes him to improve his knowledge of various programs and tools in order to work more quickly and effectively.

Tom offers the advice; “Get the most out of your classes, even the ones you don’t like, especially the ones you don’t like, because you will find that your career will force you to draw upon everything you’ve ever learned and then some. Most important, buck up and do your work to the best of your ability. You don’t get to choose your projects most days, and there is zero tolerance for slacking.”

Elisa constructs storyboards, designs style frames, and works with texture, lighting and 2D and 3D animation at Gasket Studios. Gasket Studios specializes in design, visual effects and animation for television and multimedia. Elisa secured her position as Jr. Designer/Animator because of her complete portfolio packet which included a cohesive and well designed demo reel and resume. Elisa enjoys creating concept art and producing unique styles to meet the needs of the clients. She also enjoys working in a small team environment because everyone is able to utilize their diverse skills and talents to complete each project.
 
Elisa offers the advice; “If you want to do 2D, draw, draw, draw, and draw some more. If you're a 3D artist, try to do your own project outside of class. It is very important to have as much independent work as possible to build a strong reel. Surround yourself with things that inspire you. Try to get used to constructive criticism because it's really important to be able to take feedback and make changes to what the client wants. Most of all, try to have fun doing it.”   
 

Jennifer S. Thompson - Winter 2007

As Designer and Design Coordinator at Riehl Designs, Inc., Jennifer is involved with many aspects of the interior design process. She completes design concepts and furnishing plans, creates design boards, coordinates the ordering, and also manages the installation of the project. Jennifer landed her position at Riehl Designs because of a previous interior design internship, her strong portfolio and her ambition to set and achieve goals that benefit the design firm. Riehl Designs is an innovative design firm, specializing in high-end residential and commercial clientele. What Jennifer enjoys most about her job is traveling on locale to complete the installations for the company. She finds it incredibly gratifying to see the development of her ideas come to life!

Jennifer offers the advice; “Go to class and be on time. Do your homework. Learn how to time manage so that your projects can be critiqued in class. Listen to your instructors and take their criticism in a professional manner. Get the most out of your internship – as you are there to learn! Ask questions. Network with others in the field. Join an organization and participate. Read as much as you can about art history and design history, as some clients are explicit about periods they love or pieces that are time specific. Remember to take time to breath, look around, and feed your creative nature in many ways. Most importantly… love what you do and who you work for.  You are going to spend a lot of time at your desk, in the office and with your coworkers, so make sure that you are happy, compensated and feel fulfilled!

While Karen presented her portfolio during the interview process at Eminent Interior Design, she projected a calm and comfortable attitude and asked questions about the company and the job responsibilities. Karen was hired as an Interior Designer for Eminent Interior Design, which focuses on high end residential design, execution of home remodeling, and new construction. Karen’s responsibilities include creating designs for both kitchens and bathrooms, producing AutoCAD drawings, determining finishing selections and specifications, and managing projects. Karen enjoys creating a space that projects a certain mood which fulfills the client’s specifications.

Karen offers the advice; “Don’t be afraid to go for the internship or job that you never think you could get. Putting yourself out there with confidence is the best thing you can do to find your dream job.”

 

Sara Treib - Winter 2007

As Head Chef at Eagle Ridge Golf Course, Sara is responsible for designing the menu, implementing new ideas, ordering and training new employees. Sara secured her current position by using her background in Culinary Arts and applying her native cooking techniques to create meals that were characteristic to the North Dakota palate. She enjoys the freedom and flexibility in developing the menu and contributing her ideas to modify and improve the restaurant.

Sara offers the advice; “First of all, start paying off your loans now. Second of all, get as much experience as you can. Experience is necessary to do anything on your own. Also, you can’t be afraid of what is in front of you. Just take one step at a time and try your best. It will all work out in the end. If you have a goal, don’t stop until you reach it. If you don’t try new things, you will never know what

 

Jeff Willis - Fall 2007

Jeff uses his Advertising skills at Nemont to create advertising for radio spots, postcards, flyers and the company’s website. Jeff landed his current position as Marketing Assistant because of his education and unique perspective on both creative work and life. Nemont, a telephone and Internet provider for the Montana and North Dakota area, hired Jeff because he could help the company creatively reach a younger demographic without loosing their conservative family-oriented demeanor. From designing a website to planning public relations events, Jeff enjoys the wide variety of responsibilities that Nemont has to offer.

Jeff offers the advice; “Live your dreams and don’t let anything get in your way.  It’s easy to get frustrated and just give up.  Life will have its obstacles that will get in your way, which is just part of the journey.  Stay positive and true to yourself; don’t let any negativity get in the way of accomplishing the things you want in life.”

Lesley works directly with clients, creating marketing materials, putting together marketing plans and choosing the right printer to complete certain projects. Lesley enjoys working with the publishing of several magazines and catalogs, which are both challenging and rewarding to create.

Lesley offers the advice; “Try to get as much interview experience and feedback on your portfolio as you can before entering the job market. You will feel more prepared and know what the employers expect during an interview.”

Eli’s education and experience were equally important and necessary in being considered for an interview at Crave Restaurant. His willingness to be open-minded, ability to take criticism, and interaction with people in a comfortable and confident manner caught the owner’s attention during the interview process. The main focus at Crave Restaurant is to give the guests a quality dining experience through the excellence in food, beverages and service. As a result of being hired during the conceptual development of Crave Restaurant, Eli became responsible for working with the kitchen designers to oversee the construction, writing a new menu, hiring a full staff, and training. He now oversees all of the kitchen functions which include developing seasonal menus, overseeing ordering and inventory. Eli is driven every day to find ways for the kitchen to become more efficient, productive, and profitable without any degradation in quality. Eli enjoys the energy of a busy restaurant and being able to create, prepare and eat amazing food. He feels satisfied knowing that all of his hard work has brought pleasure to hundreds of people.

Eli offers the advice; “Working hard, being prudent, and making good decisions are necessary for success.  However, the most important thing I’ve learned cannot be taught in school or even on the job.  You have to treat people with respect.  I know I would not be in the position I’m in if it wasn’t for my dedication to treating guest, owners, co-workers, and especially employees with the utmost respect.  Being considerate, compassionate, understanding and patient sets you apart from others in this industry and shows the maturity and knowledge of a leader.”      

 

Zach Zander - Winter 2008

Zach is currently working as the Graphics Coordinator at Bracketron, a supplier for mounting solutions and accessories for mobile electronics.
