Jacob Ward - Winter 2010
Bachelor of Science in Web Design & Interactive Media
The Art Institutes International Minnesota
User Experience Designer
The Nerdery

What's the best part of working at the Nerdery?
Everything! The people, the business, and doing what I am passionate about.

What's the best thing about the people you work with?
How nerdy we would sound if someone overheard us talking in public.

What advice do you have for current or graduating students?
Do what you love and the money will eventually follow. Make yourself irreplaceable. Keep learning.

How did your education at Ai help prepare you for your career?
Education is a funny thing. It is truly impossible to teach you everything you need to know in the few short years spent at Ai Minnesota. What Ai Minnesota does is builds the fundamental principals you need to begin your career. What they say is true, you will learn more in 3 months at your job then you do your entire school career. What your school career does is teach you how to continue learning once you’re in the field. Ai Minnesota gives you the tools, knowledge and resources to get in the door. What you do from there is up to you.

Jessica Green - Spring 2010
The Art Institutes International Minnesota
Bachelor of Science in Web Design & Interactive Media
Software Engineer
The Nerdery

Any advice you can offer a recent graduate or graduating student?
If you can somehow manage it, do mock-interviews before you actually start your job-hunt I would really stress this if you're really not a people-person or are extremely shy. Also, do not think that just because you're done with school, that you've finished learning everything about web design and development. My first day working at The Nerdery, I got tossed onto a project where I had to learn Zend Framework — which is a PHP framework similar to CakePHP or Code-Igniter.

How did your education at Ai help you prepare for your career?
I think all of the Career Development courses really helped me in areas that were my weakest points; namely verbal-communication and people-skills. I improved my stronger-points, primarily written communication. As far as design skills, the early fundamental classes, and the senior-level portfolio classes helped me sharpen my design skills.

What's the best part of working at the Nerdery?
The opportunity to learn new technology, expand my knowledge-base, and increase and improve my skills.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever gotten?
Never give up, and never back down.

Jamie Birthler - Fall 2009
Bachelor of Science in Multimedia & Web Design
The Art Institutes International Minnesota
Frontend Developer
The Nerdery

What advice would you offer to current or graduating students?
A big part of your free time should be spent pushing your skills further. There's only so much time you have in the classroom to ask questions and get a basic understanding of a few languages. If you want to really find your strengths and be successful, you have to always be teaching yourself. Try things at home, fail, ask questions in class, then do it all over again. Just showing up in class isn't going to make you good at what you do.

What's the best part of working at the Nerdery?
I'm literally surrounded by geniuses.

Jason Dicks - Fall 2008
Bachelor of Science in Web Design & Interactive Media
Frontend Developer
The Nerdery

What advice would you offer to current or graduating students?
My advice to any recent or soon to be graduates would be to really put a lot of effort into creating a solid and interesting portfolio.  Don't take any shortcuts, and show off what you are capable of doing.  In my opinion, if you’re able to impress a potential employer with work that you can also back up, this is the key to landing the job you want.

How did your education at Ai Minnesota help prepare you for your career?
I think that, more than anything, my education taught me how to stay resourceful and up-to-date on what is important to industry employers while allowing me to work creatively.

What's the best part of working at The Nerdery?
The atmosphere and the people.

What's the best thing about the people you work with?
Their willingness to help when you can't figure something out.

Matt Tonak - Winter 2001
Associate of Applied Science in Web Design & Interactive Media
The Art Institutes International Minnesota
Community Manager
The Nerdery

What advice would you offer to current or graduating students?
Never stop learning. The interactive development field evolves rapidly and you need to keep up with it. If I stopped learning when I graduated 10 years ago, I would be developing websites using tables and only using CSS to make my links change color when hovered.

How did your education at Ai Minnesota help prepare you for your career?
One of the best things I took away from Ai was learning how to work in groups. Brainstorming ideas is better when you can bounce them off someone. Same goes for problem solving. Someone else's perspective on how to solve a problem always ends up with you learning something new.

What's the best part of working at the Nerdery?
Definitely the free breakfast every morning. I fight the urge to come in on weekends because it just doesn't feel right eating a bowl of cereal at home anymore.

Merne Asplund - Fall 2009
The Art Institutes International Minnesota
Bachelor of Science in Web Design & Interactive Media
Frontend Developer
The Nerdery

What advice would you offer to current or graduating students?
Go out of your way to teach yourself the languages you enjoy. PRACTICE. Every language is a niche in this community, grab a few and be great at them

What's the best piece of advice you've ever gotten?
You will never succeed fantastically, unless you risk failing miserably.

What's the best part of working at the Nerdery?
Having brilliant minds around me to work with.  This drives me to becoming better.

Alex stood out in the hiring process at Kuryakyn because of his knowledge in many aspects of design, software, and film. As the Designer and Videographer, the main part of Alex’s job is to create promotional videos for Kuryakyn, as well as installation videos for the motorcycle accessories. He is also responsible for sending out email newsletters, coding html documents, scheduling filming dates, and thinking of new ideas for promotional videos. Kuryakyn is one of the largest motorcycle accessories producer/dealers and it produces accessories for Harley Davidson motorcycles, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, and other road bikes. What Alex enjoys most about his job is filming because it encourages and challenges him to become aware of the continuity and techniques with the videos that he creates.

Alex offers the advice: “To be honest, right now we artists are a dime-a-dozen with others that have plenty of years against us at every interview. If we don't express passion and show talents that go beyond our degrees, then how could we ever flourish into what we've dreamed to be? NEVER be just a Photographer, Designer, or Chef. Be well-versed and passionate!”
