Student Counseling Services

For many students, attending The Art Institutes International Minnesota marks the first time they are independent of their families and friends.  Many are unfamiliar with their surroundings:  a new city, perhaps a new state, or for some, a new country.  Some students may experience personal or academic difficulties, and those difficulties may interfere with personal or academic progress.

The goal of counseling is personal growth as defined for each individual client.  Student Counseling Services provides confidential, short-term counseling, crisis intervention and community resource referral services for a broad range of concerns.  Counseling services are offered at no cost to students currently enrolled at The Art Institutes International Minnesota.

In addition to offering counseling services, the school counselor can also provide referrals to outside community resources and agencies.  If you would like to schedule a counseling appointment, or to learn more about counseling please contact our Counselor.

Scheduling an appointment:
To schedule an appointment call 612-656-6866 or stop in the office located on the lower level, Room 016.  It is helpful to arrive about 15 minutes early for your first appointment as there are some intake forms you will be required to complete prior to the start of the session.  If you prefer, you can download the forms to complete ahead of time so that you can make full use of your first visit.  If you would like to download the forms, click on the link below:

Failed or late-cancelled appointment policy:
Failed and late cancelled appointments jeopardize the ability of the Student Counseling Services to provide appropriate access to care to The Art Institutes International Minnesota student body.  Therefore, the following policies apply to any student scheduling with SCS:
  • It is required that students attend all scheduled appointments.  If the student is unable to attend a scheduled appointment he/she is required to call and cancel the appointment 24 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.  The student may leave a cancellation message on the SCS voicemail if no one is available.
  • Failed or late-cancellation of two scheduled appointments within a quarter will result in a hold being placed on the students’ scheduling privileges until the student has presented in person to discuss possible future appointments with the counselor.  It may be determined by the counselor that referral to mental health resources in the community is the proper course of action at that time.

To make a referral:
Faculty, academic directors, and academic advisors often have frequent contact with students, and may become aware of a student(s) who is struggling academically.  If you have a concern about a student who is enrolled at The Art Institutes International Minnesota it may be helpful to discuss your concern with the student.  This discussion should include making the student aware of the services available at Student Counseling Services and encouraging him/her to schedule an appointment by calling 612-656-6866 or stopping by our offices located in the lower level, Room 016.
