International Students

International Admissions Policy
All international applicants to The Art Institute of New York City must meet the same admissions standards as all other students (see section under Admissions Requirements). Additionally, international students must demonstrate competence in the English language by one of the following standards:

  • Graduation from a secondary or postsecondary institution whose primary language of instruction was English;
  • Diploma and Certificate programs require a minimum TOEFL score of 480.  Associate and Bachelor programs require 500 (173 computer-based),  or an equivalent level of English proficiency from and approved English as a Second Language (ESL) program; or,
  • Proof of successful completion of a minimum of two quarters of postsecondary coursework at an accredited institution in which English was the language of instruction.

Admissions Requirements for Non-Immigrant Students
An international student seeking to enroll at The Art Institute of New York City in valid non-immigrant status must submit each of the following items:

  • A complete and signed Application for Admission Form including the 150-word essay;
  • A completed and signed Enrollment Agreement;
  • Original or official copies of all educational transcripts (high school and, if applicable, university level academic records) and diplomas. These educational transcripts and diplomas can be translated at The Art Institute;
  • Proof of English language proficiency (See International Admissions Policy for acceptable proof);
  • A completed and signed Sponsor's Statement of Financial Support (this statement is not required if the student is self-sponsored);
  • Official Bank Statements. Bank statements must verify sufficient funds to cover the cost of the educational program as well as all living expenses;
  • A photocopy of the applicant's passport to provide proof of birth date and citizenship (if the applicant is outside the United States and has not yet acquired a passport, they will need to submit a copy of their birth certificate);
  • Proof of Health Insurance. Students who do not possess health insurance upon applying to The Art Institute of New York City must be prepared to purchase health insurance through a provider approved by The Art Institute upon commencement of studies.

Transfer Students
If an international student is transferring from a postsecondary school in the United States, the following information is also required:

  • A copy of the page within the applicant's passport which has the US nonimmigrant visa stamp;
  • A copy of the front and back of the Form I-20 issued by the previously attended institution;
  • A copy of the front and back of Form I-94 from the applicant's passport;
  • The International Student Transfer Clearance Form (which will be provided to the applicant by The Art Institute) which must be completed by the previous school that the applicant attended.
This school is authorized under federal law to enroll non-immigrant alien students.
