POSITION DESCRIPTION
Title: Academic Advisor
Department: Academic Affairs
Position Summary:
The Academic Advisor works directly with students in a variety of disciplines to identify their needs and implement a plan of action. This individual is responsible for sustaining an environment of academic and professional excellence for students and educational team members. Duties include a mix of instruction and student advising. The Academic Advisor works closely with the Educational Team in pursuit of persistence endeavors.
Key Job Elements:
- Maintain direct contact with student advisees.
- Meeting with individual as well as small groups of students on an ongoing basis.
- Awareness of FERPA and parental confidentiality issues.
- Development of advising action plans: implement and monitor.
- Maintain Student Profile information including parent information, health issues, financial, academic progress, personal problems, language barriers and employment issues.
- Advise students concerning scheduling, attendance, academic progress and curriculum issues.
- Maintain access to attendance files with notification and documentation in a timely fashion.
- Monitor grade information on assigned advisees.
- Keep file on curriculum issues (advanced standings, special schedules, etc.).
- Inform and help students access all available services.
- Apprise students of housing options.
- Advise students to stay current with financial obligations.
- Direct students to Counseling when deemed necessary.
- For part-time employment, direct students to Employment Assistance.
- Discuss student progress with instructors.
- Monitor grades and question weak performance areas.
- Act as bridge between student and instructor.
- Work with the Education Department to ease student transition during the registration process.
- Create and process special and regular schedules.
- Other duties as assigned.
Organizational Relationships:
- Reports to: Director of Academic Achievement
- Interacts with: Academic Directors, Faculty, Registrar, Student Services, Admissions and Student Financial Services
Position Requirements:
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in appropriate subject area.
- Two years full-time academic advising at the college level at a minimum
- Ability to successfully interact with students.
- Ability to multi-task and maintain a hectic pace.
