John Magbanua graduated from The Art Institute of Philadelphia in 2000 with an Associates Degree in Computer Animation. John has excelled in his field from the moment he stepped into The Art Institute. Making Dean’s List every quarter, John took his education seriously and gained valuable skills in motion graphics. Always pushing the limits of creativity, John won Best of Quarter for Animation.
John landed a job right out of school that has allowed him to continue to grow as an artist and animator. Chances are if you have ever attended a professional sporting event in Philadelphia, you have seen John’s work first hand. As a Graphics Coordinator for Comcast-Spectacor, John designs and creates looks for the in-game presentations for the Philadelphia Flyers, Sixers, Charge, Phantoms, Wings, and Kixx. John is responsible for the in-game stills, animations, screensavers, headshots, and video clips that appear on the scoreboard at the Wachovia Center. His work is displayed on the big screen nearly everyday, and is seen by millions of people each year.
In addition to keeping us all entertained at sporting events, John also develops animations for commercial spots and corporate videos. Doing your job well means keeping up on trends and changes in the industry, and part of John’s job is to make recommendations and assemble hardware and software for the graphics workstations for Comcast-Spectacor.
Outside of his full time job, John dabbles in freelance projects. In August of 2002, he created Tune in and Sponsor ANC LED animations for the 2002 Summer X-Games for ESPN. John has also created company and broadcast logos for business such as Fusion Media Group.
John is an extremely active alumnus. He has often returned to The Art Institute of Philadelphia for employer reviews and portfolio shows. He has been an active member on the Advisory Board, and turns to his alma mater to help him fill internship positions and work on freelance projects. We at The Art Institute highly value John’s eagerness to provide insight and his continued involvement in our programs.
While in many respects his career is just beginning, John has made a name for himself in a difficult and highly competitive industry. Despite the tough animation market, John has risen to great heights, and we are confident that his creative drive and desire to succeed will push the envelope in the animation industry.
