Michael Campagna graduated from The Art Institute of Philadelphia in 2000 with an Associates Degree in Culinary Arts. After graduation, Michael put his culinary career in overdrive and wasted no time in reaching for his dream – to open his own restaurant.
Culinary Arts is a drastic change from Michael’s first career as an Equity Analyst for the Philadelphia Stock Exchange. Michael worked hard to support himself and pay for tuition while attending Temple University for a Bachelors degree in Finance. After working in finance for a few years, he decided to try a different career path and enrolled in the Culinary Arts program at The Art Institute of Philadelphia.
It took dedication and enthusiasm to give up his well-paying finance career to start over in an entirely new field. Michael took his education seriously and, while in school, he was able to obtain positions working in some of the finest kitchens in Philadelphia. He also took advantage of the internship program at The Art Institute of Philadelphia and gained valuable skills that gave him an edge in the industry.
Like many culinarians, Michael began working as a waiter and eventually climbed his way up the career ladder. He quickly acquired skills that allowed him to rapidly move through the ranks all the way from food prep and line cook to sous chef. Michael diversified his experiences by not only learning culinary skills, but he also took the time to learn the management end of running a restaurant.
In the summer of 2003, Michael and his brother Anthony boldly stepped out on their own and opened a charming restaurant, Ava. Located on 3rd Street in the old city section of Philadelphia, the restaurant offers a warm and comfortable neighborhood dining location that serves authentic Italian food. Michael takes pride in blending traditional family recipes with authentic Italian specialties.
Michael takes every opportunity to mention his education at The Art Institute. In articles written about him in the Philadelphia Weekly, Philadelphia Inquirer, Chestnut Hill Local, and Main Line Times, he always remembers where he got his start. Michael also looks to other Art Institute graduates to help staff his kitchen.
Despite the pressures of running his own business, Michael takes time to volunteer within the community. Ava has donated time and food to a number of charities in Philadelphia, including programs like SCANtastic and Taste of the Nation.
Michael is a shining example of what the Culinary Arts at The Art Institute of Philadelphia has to offer. We are proud of Michael’s accomplishments, and know that his drive and determination to succeed will carry him to even greater heights.
