Library

The Library at The Art Institute of Philadelphia, located on the lower level of 1610 Chestnut Street, provides a variety of materials and services to support the college's curriculum. The collection numbers over 29,000 volumes and includes a wide range of materials in a variety of formats. There is a reference collection that will give quick access to many types of information. The library has over 2000 video and DVD titles that may be borrowed by students. A wide selection of electronic resources is accessible through the library's web site: http://rs185.aisites.com.

The library subscribes to over 180 periodicals (magazines and newspapers) including both professional and general-interest publications, and full-text searchable journal databases of thousands of titles, accessible through any Internet computer.

Most books may be checked out for a three-week period. Reference and Reserve items must be used in the library. Students may have on loan up to six items at one time. An overdue fine is charged for late returns. Students must present their Art Institute of Philadelphia Library barcode to borrow any library materials. Students are responsible for the return and good condition of any library materials that they use or borrow.

Equipment in the library includes personal computers, a scanner, two photocopiers ($.10/copy), and on-line search capabilities for both books and journals.

The library is open most days, including evenings and Saturdays. (See schedule posted outside the library.) Library staff are available to help students locate appropriate materials, assist with reference questions, and explain the use of the equipment. Suggestions for new materials and services are always welcome.

Students are encouraged to take advantage of outside resources as well. The library is a member of the Tri-State College Library Cooperative (TCLC) and students may use any of the member libraries with a letter of introduction. A list of TCLC area colleges can be found on the library website. The Art Institute of Philadelphia students may also use the library of the University of the Arts, and may use and borrow materials from the Free Library of Philadelphia. Students can pick up an application for the Free Library in the Student Affairs office.
