Chef Teaches Culinary Skills to Local Middle School Students

Students at Pittsburgh Langley K-8 middle school are learning their way around the kitchen thanks to a new after-school program led by Chef Odette Smith-Ransome, culinary instructor at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Students in grades 6-8 will join Chef Smith-Ransome in Pittsburgh Langley K-8’s home economics suite once a week for culinary classes. The first of its kind in the Pittsburgh Public School system, this program will teach students cooking and baking, along with knife skills and nutrition. After each lesson, students will receive the ingredients to take home and practice the recipe for their families. These classes will also serve as a learning experience for culinary students at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Each week, Chef Smith-Ransome will take two students with her to give them a taste of what it’s like to teach a culinary class.
