The Impact of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh’s Alumni Network on American Culture 1921-2006
The Creative Life Opened at The Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center on May 13, 2006.
Through August 2007, visitors to The Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center will be able to imagine what life would be without design, art, style, color, packaging or form. Browsing a series of vignettes from a typical American home, visitors will see room-by-room how much impact commercial design has on our daily lives. The Creative Life showcases a comprehensive collection of professional samples of more than 150 of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh’s alumni. Alumni were selected for the exhibit based on their career contributions to mainstream culture and their work is positioned into its’ natural place in the home. The foundation for The Creative Life was made possible by a generous donation of home furnishings by IKEA Pittsburgh.
For example, the child’s room in The Creative Life exhibit is filled with toys designed by Kevin Hayes and Tom Bower at Fisher Price, and Andrea Cizl for Wild Republic. The child’s television shows a loop of scenes from movies on which Art Institute graduates have earned animation or effects credits such as Chicken Little, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Comic books strewn about the room illustrated by alumnus Paul Gulacy for Marvel/DC Comics and MAD Magazines with the familiar face of Alfred E. Neuman, the creation of alumnus Frank Kelly Freas.
Throughout the exhibit, hundreds of samples collected from photojournalists, interior designers, animators, industrial designers, video and digital media specialists and graphic designers all over the United States create a lasting impression. All of them got their start in Pittsburgh.
“Without question, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh’s story is best told through the lives and careers of its alumni. We want the Pittsburgh community to be proud of the legacy we’ve created in our 85-year history,” said Art Institute President George L. Pry. “Even life-long residents of the city will be amazed when they realize how our graduates have influenced their lives in ways they would never have realized.”
The Creative Life exhibit was designed by a team of Art Institute staff and faculty, including project developers Carrie Butler and Norm Huelsman; Interior Design Faculty Member Michael Obusek; and exhibit designers and fabricators Greg Butler and Dan Bollman. Alumni Coordinator Dave DiBella provided consultation and alumni research.
The Creative Life exhibit opens May 13 and will remain at The History Center through August 2007. The History Center is located at 1212 Smallman Street in the city’s Strip District. Visit their web site for hours and admission.
