The following links are a list of questions that are often asked by our clients. If you have any other questions, please to contact the Writers' Center via email (mastewart@aii.edu) or telephone (412-291-7387).

  • What should I bring to my appointment?
  • When you come to a session, make sure to bring your:

    • Course syllabus
    • Writing assignment
    • Relevant reading material
    • Any writing in progress

  • Is it O.K. if I didn’t make an appointment on WCOnline?
  • We do accept walk-ins if there is a slot open and if the tutors have the availability. There is no harm walking in to see.

  • Is the Writers’ Center free?
  • Yes and no. The Writers’ Center doesn’t charge for its services; however, your tuition has paid for the Writers’ Center, so why not make the use of what you’ve already paid for?

  • Who does the Writers’ Center help?
  • The tutors at the Writers’ Center help AiP students in every major in any level of ability. Whether you need help with an English class, a core class, a resume, personal creative writing, website text, or thesis; the Writers’ Center can help. We are also available to faculty and staff of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.

  • Can I come in just to use the computers?
  • Yes. All you need to do is sign in and out to have use of the computers.

  • Will a tutor (writing consultant) write my paper for me?
  • No. The role of a tutor (writing consultant) is to provide support and guidance, not to tell you what to write.

  • When should I go to the Writers’ Center?
    • Whenever you have writing you’d like to make better.
    • When you need help with brainstorming.
    • When you aren’t sure if something is unclear.
    • When you wonder if you’ve said too much or too little.
    • When you need assistance with in-text and end of text citations, or need help with paraphrasing and giving credit to the information source.
    • When you want help with seeing if you have any grammar, spelling, or punctuation mistakes.
  • What should I expect when I go to the Writers’ Center?
  • You will be asked to identify why you’ve come to the Center. The consultant will ask you to explain what sort of writing you are working on, what the assignment is, and when it’s due. You’ll be asked to read what you’ve written so far and talk about the concerns you have about your writing. Then, you and the consultant will talk about your paper together.

There are no grades and no homework at the Writers’ Center. Instead, your consultant will tell you what she thinks you were trying to get across in your writing, and what parts of that writing did or didn’t work to make your intended meanings clear. You can then compare their response to what you were trying to say, and from there you can work with the consultant on ways of making sure that your writing really says what you want it to.

  • Where is the Writers’ Center?
  • The Writers’ Center is in room 217 on the second floor at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. We’re down the hall from Admissions and around the corner of the rest rooms.

  • Will I be able to get help from the tutors outside of the Writers’ Center?
  • No. The tutors are paid for their valuable time and work. Why not make an appointment when you know they will be available and be paid for their services?

  • How do I schedule an appointment with WCOnline?
  • If it is your first time making an appointment, you must register with WCOnline. Click Here for instructions on how to register and make appointments.
