History & Mission
art and design school student

The Art Institute of Portland, formerly Bassist College, has served the Pacific Northwest for more than 40 years, and enjoys a reputation for innovative and practical education. Since 1963, the school has produced skilled alumni who have achieved success in their respective career fields.

The Mission of The Art Institute of Portland is undergraduate design education. Degree programs at the College include both liberal education and professional education.  Instructional programs require course work in communications, the humanities, the social sciences, in natural science and mathematics; they also prepare students for entry-level positions in design fields by focusing on the demands of professional practice.  The College is dedicated to personal service.  The College seeks to be an innovative center for design, a lively supporter of the arts, and a positive community partner in the city of Portland, the state of Oregon, and the greater Pacific Northwest.

Nondiscrimination Statement

The Art Institute is committed to providing equal opportunity in its recruitment, admission, educational programs, and employment without discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, or disability.
