The Art Institute of Portland Hosting Fundraiser for Sauvie Island Center

12/2/2011

Return to Our Main Events Page

WHAT:
Join James Beard award-wining Chef and The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Portland Instructor Cory Schreiber and San Francisco author and Chef Sam Mogannam for a 3-course meal featuring recipes from Mogannam’s new cookbook Bi-Rite Market’s Eat Good Food – A Grocer’s Guide to Shopping, Cooking and Creating Community through Food.  Funds raised go towards the Sauvie Island Center, a non-profit organization that educates youth about food, farming and environmentalism.

Internationally recognized chef and author Schreiber is a long-time devotee of local and sustainable food.  In 2007, Cory took his considerable skills to the Oregon Department of Agriculture, where he served as the state’s first Farm-to-School Program Manager.  The program, which connects Oregon's K-12 schools with local farms, seeks to provide healthy options in school cafeterias and increase nutrition education opportunities. The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Portland offers the only Culinary Management program in Oregon, and is the only culinary school in the United States with an Academic Minor in Sustainability.

For those interested in getting into the sustainable food movement, Schreiber has a few tips on how to begin:

  • Contact a local farm and start buying goods from that farm and get to know the farmers.
  • For parents, if you have kids in school, ask the school to support field trips to farms or agriculture study in the class room.
  • Support fund-raisers connected to agriculture and small farms and make a point of supporting them 2-3 times a year.
  • When shopping at your local market, practice and focus on flavor first and eye appeal of produce. Know what fruits and vegetables are in season and try to find out the source of those products.

About the Sauvie Island Center
The Sauvie Island Center serves elementary school youth of Portland by providing hands-on educational field trips at our Sauvie Island location in Howell Territorial Park, managed by Metro.  Through our education programs, the Center seeks to increase the food, farm and environmental literacy of the next generation.  The field trips take place on the Sauvie Island Organics farm, and the curriculum includes modules covering Soil Investigations, Plant Parts Investigations, and Wildlife and the Food Chain.  Our trips also include the Grow Lunch Garden, where students plant, tend, harvest and eat fresh vegetables from their own field.
