STUDENT AFFAIRS: COUNSELING AND DISABILITY SERVICES

Counseling

What is Counseling?
Personal counseling is a chance to talk about what is on your mind with an objective person. The counselor can help you learn new skills and ways of looking at situations so that you will be more capable of solving new problems on your own in the future.

The fact is that many students take advantage of counseling services offered at The Art Institute of Portland. All counseling is confidential. No information is released to anyone without your written consent. There are exceptions to this - such as if we learn you are in danger of harming yourself or others. Our counselors are here to serve you as experienced, non-judgmental and objective helpers.

What can I expect from counseling?
The decision to begin counseling is an important one. Counseling may help you with a variety of concerns, including personal issues, such as anxiety, depression or relationship problems. Counseling may also help you with academic concerns, such as test-taking, study skills and time management. After discussing the concerns that led you to counseling, you and your counselor will decide which services are appropriate. Referrals to community resources, workshops, group counseling, or psychiatric consultation may also be made, as appropriate.
