Whether you are a student moving away from home for the first time or you’re just trying to find a new apartment in a different part of town, the Residence Life and Housing staff at The Art Institute of Portland wants to make sure that you have comfortable, affordable and convenient housing options. We’re here to help you assess your needs and help facilitate the process of finding an appropriate place to live, whether in school-sponsored housing or a place independent of The Art Institute of Portland

Goose Hollow Plaza

  • Conveniently located just 3/4 of a mile from The Art Institute of Portland, and blocks from free public transportation.
  • Two bedroom, one bathroom apartments for four students
  • Controlled access building with electronic door locks
  • Apartments come furnished, including all major kitchen appliances
  • Cost includes rent, apartment furnishings, water/sewer/garbage, electricity, heat, and on-site staff and activities.
  • Residents include students from other Portland colleges and universities
  • Located in the Goose Hollow area of Portland, with easy access to Portland's hottest social scene, including retail, restaurants, and more!
  • Student leases begin at four consecutive quarters.  After four quarters have been completed, students may renew for shorter leases.

Who will be my roommate?  
As much as possible, roommates are assigned based on the common interests and habits listed on the housing application.  Each apartment houses four students.

What about utilities?  
The cost of electricity, water/garbage/sewer and internet are included in the overall fees for housing.

Is there security in housing?  
Yes. Art Institute apartments are located in gated communities. In addition, professional staff and student resident assistants live among students in housing and are available to assist 24 hours a day.

Is parking available?  
Yes. Students are responsible for making their own parking arrangements. Long term parking is available by renting a space in the underground parking lot offered at Goose Hollow Plaza.  See the Goose Hollow Plaza front desk for more information on rates and availability.  You may also purchase a parking permit with a local parking garage, or a yearly long term street-parking permit through the city of Portland.

What furnishings are provided?  
Each apartment is furnished with twin size beds, a dresser for each room, nightstand, a sofa and love seat or oversized chair, a dining table and chairs, refrigerator, dishwasher, and stove. back to top

How many students live in an apartment?  
Apartments at Goose Hollow Plaza have 2 bedrooms with 1 bath shared by four Art Institute students. There are some 1 bedroom apartments with 1 bath shared by two Art Institute students. The number of 1 bedroom apartments are very limited and are on a first come basis. Each apartment is single sex while the building is co-ed.  back to top

Can I receive accommodations for my disability in student housing?  
If you are a student who has a documented disability, as defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, you may be eligible to receive housing accommodations. You should first apply and be accepted at The Art Institute of Portland and apply for college housing. Once you have received housing confirmation, notify the disabilities services coordinator of your request for accommodations.

What if I don't drive?  
Portland’s public transportation Tri-Met serves the greater Portland area with bus, streetcar and MAX service.  Goose Hollow Plaza is within walking distance of all three options.  Public transportation is free within fareless square.  See trimet.org for more information on fareless square and available travel routes.  Discounted public transportation passes are sold in our Supply Store.

Are there facilities for washing and drying my clothes?  
Yes. Laundry facilities are located on the second and third floor of Goose Hollow Plaza.

May I bring my own computer?  
Although computers connected to the Internet are available in the Computer Labs on campus, you are welcome to bring your own. You will be responsible for providing your own wireless router if you want Wi-Fi.  You may also desire to bring a small table or desk to put your computer on.

May I have guests in my apartment?  
Guests are welcome during daily visiting hours as long as they don't disturb other students in the apartment.

Where can I pick up mail?  
Mailboxes are conveniently located near your apartment.

What should I bring?  
Aside from personal items, you may want to bring linens, kitchen utensils, cleaning supplies, an alarm clock, stereo/radio, microwave, and television set.  We recommend that you contact your roommates prior to moving in to avoid duplicating large items.

What size are the apartments? 
The apartments range from 900-954 sq ft. and each bedroom is approximately 300 sq ft.

What does it cost to live in student housing?  
As of fall 2008, the cost per quarter ranges from $1805 to $2215 per student. Contracts starting in winter, spring, or mid-quarter are also available. Housing rates are subject to change without notice. Contracts are for four consecutive quarters.

Can housing fees be included in my financial aid package?  
The cost of Art Institute housing can, in most cases, be included in your financial aid package.  Contact your financial planner for more information.

How do I sign up for Student Housing?
In order to live in Student Housing, students must first complete ALL of the following:

  • Be accepted to The Art Institute of Portland
  • Complete a Student Financial Plan to include housing costs
  • Compete and return the housing application
  • Submit a $250 Security Deposit (cash, check, credit card, money order accepted)

Housing assignments are made on a first-come, fist served basis upon receipt of the Housing Application and Security Deposit.  In the event the student leaves Student Housing prior to the end of the lease agreement or withdraws their application less than 30 days prior to the start of the quarter, the security deposit shall be forfeited.  The initial license agreement is for four consecutive quarters.
