Dear friends and Family, Thank you for your interest and investment in your student’s Academic and developmental success while they are contributing member of our School Sponsored Housing Community. This resource is designed to assist you and give direction in supporting your student through this transition in their life as classmates, roommates and members of a much larger community. School Sponsored Housing consists of 3 different levels of staffing to support your student and the following are descriptions of the different staff here to assist them in their academic success. Please encourage your student to get to know these three different levels of staff so that they may smoothly acclimate to this transition they are beginning in their lives.

• Resident Advisors (RA’s): These are full-time students enrolled in one of our Academic programs who are hired to support community involvement and networking opportunities. These student workers provide extended SHAC (Student Housing Activity Center) hours. At the SHAC they facilitate Social and educational programming for everything from Faculty workshops, Video/board game nights and even Barbeque and free food events. The Resident Advisors also support community policies regarding noise complaints, guest behavior and Drug/Alcohol policies while walking throughout the community on their evening duty rounds.
  • Please direct your student to a Resident Assistant  (RA) if:
    • Your student is interested in events and activities that happen weekly
    • Your student is struggling to connect with their roommate or others in the community. An RA is there to help welcome them into the group.
    •  Your student has questions about academics or academic success as the RA’s are also students and they can help your student maneuver the challenges of staying on top of their academics.
    • Your student would benefit from the knowledge and experiences of a successful student at The Art Institute of California – San Diego.

• Residence Life Coordinator (RLC): This is a full time live-in professional dedicated to the development of the School Sponsored Housing community. The RLC works 40 hours / week and his/her office which is located in the Student Housing Activity Center (SHAC/ apt.345) where he/she manages the RA’s and supports a safe and enjoyable community for your student.  The RLC is there to be a professional who welcomes your student too our School Sponsored Housing Community and supports an environment which fosters academic success. This entails everything from orienting your student to the community, resolving maintenance requests, managing roommate concerns and overseeing the community programming. This role is also there to provide a professional presence in the event of an emergency and carries an emergency cell phone with him/her 24 hours a day.
  • Please direct your student to the RLC if:
    • There is a crisis or emergency within the community
    • There is a roommate conflict
    • Your student is unclear about  policy
    • Your student would like to know more about campus resources
    • There is homesickness
    • There is a maintenance request
    • There is any questions regarding his/her residential community

• Director of Residential Life & Housing: As the head of the School Sponsored Housing department the Director oversees the entire success of the program. Everything from managing the residential community to resolving student concerns. The Director of Residential life & Housing’s goal is to remove distractions from your student’s academic success and support the staff while creating a safe and welcoming academically focused community.  The Director of Residential Life & Housing’s office is located in the North Campus.  While overseeing the day to day operations of the School Sponsored Housing community this role is here to respond to both parent and student concerns.
  • Please direct your student to the Director of Residential Life & Housing if:
    • Your student is struggling with this transition of independence
    • Roommate concerns are urgent
    • Your student is unclear as to the resources available to them at School Sponsored Housing
    • Clarification on policy is needed
    • Your student is requesting a Medical Single
    • They have any concern regarding their experience within School Sponsored Housing

I hope this information clarifies all of the different staff members who are here to support and assist your student while they are members of our community.  I know this is a big transition for some students and I want to assure you that there are dedicated staff members here to welcome them and to support them through this pivotal time in your student’s life.
