Works by Sergio Gomez to Show at Ruth Ray Memorial Gallery

[Schaumburg, September 18, 2008]  – The Ruth Ray Memorial Gallery at The Illinois Institute of Art – Schaumburg will present an exhibition by Sergio Gomez entitled "Perceived Presence" through November 14, 2008. The gallery is open to the public at no charge Monday - Thursday 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., Fridays 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Saturdays 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Gomez is an accomplished graphic designer, web designer, and illustrator as well as the co-owner of 33 Collective Gallery in Chicago and Director of VisualArtToday.com, an online exhibition space for international contemporary art. He attended Joliet Junior College, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Governors State University, and Northern Illinois University, where he received a Master of Fine Arts degree. In 1995, while at Governors State University, Gomez received the Lincoln Laureate Medallion Award. The art of Gomez has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions in venues such as The Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, Brauer Museum of Art, Museum of Science and Industry, 33 Collective Gallery, and Beverly Art Center among others. 

The human form is the main element in Gomez's work and is often depicted as a shadow, aura, ghost, or energy light. Gomez does not develop the social, political, or historical characteristics of figures such as clothing, race, social status, etc. Instead, the figure's presence overrides its identity. The figures exist in condensed fields of color and texture that tend to resemble nature and appeal for a sense of human awareness and spiritual consciousness.
