Alumni interview: Andrew Ahl
Graphic Design
Andrew Ahl, 2000 Graphic Design graduate, entices would-be travelers to explore exotic destinations like the Galapagos Islands. It's his brochures and collateral for Zegrahm Expeditions that promote the luxury travel packages that get people out of their living rooms and encourage them to, well, live. Here, he talks about his education at The Art Institute of Seattle and sheds a little more light on how he approaches his work.
Did your classes prepare you for the real world?
Most definitely. Especially my print production, professional practices, student studio, and portfolio classes.
Did your instructors influence you?
Extremely. Their sensibilities became my sensibilities until I had the wherewithal to develop my own.
How would you describe the creative environment at the school?
I would describe the environment as technical. Lots of right angles and a lot of very determined, focused people. Competitive people.
Where do you work and what does the company do?
I work at a high-end expedition-style travel company here in Seattle called Zegrahm Expeditions. We operate educationally based, high-end, small group luxury expeditions throughout the world. We specialize in remote or hard-to-reach areas.
What are you currently working on?
I'm working on brochures for our Galapagos, Black Sea, and British Isles programs. Soon I'll begin work on a brochure for our Greenland/Labrador/Baffin Island program.
How do you come up with your ideas?
Through research and available photography. Sometimes a great photograph dictates a brochure's overall look and feel. Sometimes I find something about a destination during my research that informs my design. Sometimes it's a combination of both, but research is always a good source for inspiration.
What do you think it really takes to succeed in your field, if you could boil it down to a few essential things?
Confidence in knowing how to put the tools and techniques you learned at school into practice, combined with perseverance and discipline.
Why should someone choose The Art Institute of Seattle?
The majority of your classes are degree specific... and you don't have to take gym! Seriously, though, if you know what you're looking for and are not blindly exploring, then The Art Institute of Seattle can be a great place to learn a technical skill.
