Alumni Interview: Gunda Lunde
Residential Design and Interior Design
Gunda Lunde, who has achieved degrees in Residential Design (1996) and Interior Design (1997) from The Art Institute of Seattle, now works for Brian Hood Lighting Design and follows her passion by designing lighting for art collectors. In her previous job she was part of an award-winning team that renovated a terminal at New York's LaGuardia International Airport. Even though she has an incredibly hectic schedule, Gunda was good enough to sit with us and answer a few questions. Read on as she sheds some light on her education at The Art Institute of Seattle and what she's currently working on.
How did The Art Institute help you to grow as an artist?
The Art Institute gave me direction and focus. And by networking with teachers, I found employment.
Did your instructors influence you?
Of course! In fact, I remain in contact with some of them. I appreciate their care, interest, and experience.
How would you describe the creative environment at the school?
The creative environment was very stimulating and challenging at the same time. There was a lot of strong inspiration within the student body. The access to different organizations was an excellent tool to sharpen our senses, and to excel to new heights.
What are you currently working on?
Currently, I design the lighting for high-end residential projects. Most of my clients are people that have an extensive art collection that needs to be properly displayed.
How do you come up with your ideas?
Lighting is a very technical field. Therefore, in addition to reading technical publications, I also look at design magazines. New catalogs and product information always inspire my creativity as well.
What do you think it really takes to succeed in your field, if you could boil it down to a few essential things?
It starts with good training, focus, good connections, and a strong sense of self.
Why should someone choose The Art Institute of Seattle?
The Art Institute of Seattle offers balanced, well-organized education programs and great teachers. For myself, The Art Institute opened the door into a great, artistic, and successful career.
