Transfer / Re-admissions

The Re-Admissions Office provides assistance to those students wishing to return to school after a leave of absence, withdrawal or suspension. For a smooth transition back into the academic mainstream, students must contact this office, located in the Admissions Department, for all information needed to return to classes.

Transfer Credits
Credits from transfer courses are not calculated in the maximum allowable credits or incremental completion rate requirements; however, transfer credits do reduce the total number of credits that must be attempted within the program. Therefore, the maximum attempted credits for a student with transfer credit is one and one-half times the number of credits required to complete for graduation.

Grades for credits transferred from any post-secondary institution will be recorded as "TR" or "K" and will not affect the student's CGPA.

Grades from courses taken in a program at the same Art Institute, if applicable to a transfer program, will be recorded and will affect the student's CGPA.

In cases in which a student has graduated from The Art Institute in one major, then subsequently begins work in a different major, grades used in the CGPA of the previous program will not be applied to the student's new program CGPA calculation.

Transfer of Credit Policy Prior to Matriculation

  1. Complete transcripts must be sent to the Admissions Office by the seventh week of the first quarter the student is enrolled at The Art Institute. No coursework will be considered for transfer of credit after the seventh week deadline.
  2. Course descriptions from the college or university catalog may be requested by the Credit Evaluator if questions arise. The catalog year must correspond with the date when the course was taken (e.g., if an English course was taken from Portland Community College in 1983, the course description from the 1983 PCC catalog must accompany the transfer of credit request).
  3. Only college-level courses (100 level or above) taken at an accredited institution of higher education will be considered for transfer, except college preparatory credits may transfer for GE82 Basic Math or GE83 College Preparatory English.
  4. Only courses with grades of "C" (2.0) or better will be considered for transfer. Only courses taken for a grade will be considered for transfer of credit. One exception: "Pass" and "Satisfactory" grades will be considered if accompanied by a statement from the college that the "P" or "S" is equivalent to a "C" (2.0) or better grade.
  5. Only courses that are equivalent to three or more quarter credits will be considered.
  6. Technology courses where transcripts are older than five years will not be accepted.
  7. No more then 75% of program credits may be transferred.
  8. The scope of the course work must fall within the transfer credit guidelines at The Art Institute. Examples include but are not limited to:
    • English Composition: Course work must include composition and grammar. Literature and ESL courses do not apply.
    • General Science: Any lab science.
    • Public Speaking: One course from the following categories: Public Speaking, Speech, Oral Communications and Professional Communications.
    • College Mathematics: One course from the following categories: Alegbra, Calculus, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics or Logic.
    • Foreign Language: Any non-native language. English does not apply.

Transfer of Credit Taken Post-Matriculation
Credits from other institutions taken after matriculation at The Art Institute of Seattle will be accepted only under the following agreement:

  • The student must be enrolled in a full-time course load, for his or her program, at The Art Institute during the same quarter in which a course is taken outside The Art Institute.
  • The student must have approval from his/her Academic Director and completed approval form prior to taking a course.
  • One course per quarter maximum will be allowed.
  • Course must be three or more credit hours and a "100" level course or higher.
  • Course description and "Post Matriculation" form must be submitted to the Registrar department prior to registering for outside course.
  • The course must be passed with a "C" (2.0) or better grade to transfer.
  • The grade will not be factored into the CGPA.
  • Courses must be taken as they pertain to the normal time sequence within the student's department.

Transferability of Art Institute Credits
The Art Institute of Seattle is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, an accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. However, the fact that a school is accredited is not necessarily an indication that credits earned at that school will be accepted by another school. In the U. S. higher education system, transferability of credit is determined by the receiving institution taking into account such factors as course content, grades, accreditation and licensing.

The mission of The Art Institute of Seattle is to help you to prepare for entry-level employment in your chosen field of study. The value of degree programs like those offered by The Art Institute of Seattle is their deliberate focus on marketable skills.

Programs offered by one school within The Art Institutes system may be similar to but not identical to programs offered at another school within the system. This is due to differences imposed by state law, use of different instructional models, and local employer needs. Therefore, if you decide to transfer to another school within The Art Institutes system, not all of the credits you earn at The Art Institute of Seattle may be transferable into that school's program.

If you are considering transferring to either another Art Institute or an unaffiliated school, it is your responsibility to determine whether that school will accept your Art Institute credits. We encourage you to make this determination as early as possible. The Art Institute of Seattle does not imply, promise, or guarantee transferability of its credits to any other institution.
