Education Services/Tutoring

The Department of Education Services
The mission of the Department of Education Services is to assist students toward success in their goals by strengthening and supporting their academic and personal development. This is accomplished through building partnerships with faculty, providing academic advising, offering group and individual tutoring, supervising testing, registration assistance, and creating opportunities for students to become effective decision makers and critical members of society. Education Services includes the Academic Advising Office (Room 616) and the Education Services Center (Room 614).

Tutoring Programs
The Tutoring program includes tutoring sessions in both one-on-one and group formats as well as in-class tutors. Sessions are offered by peer tutors and some faculty on either an appointment basis or during drop-in hours. Academic skills include math, English composition, Photoshop, speech communication, test preparation, and note taking. Peer tutors also offer tutoring in core subjects that relate to students' programs through a Peer Tutor referral service. Peer tutors' specialties and contact information are available in Education Services and on the web at peertutors.com.

Testing Center
The Department of Education Services provides testing as a service to faculty and for students who have missed tests, who need accommodations, or who choose to take one or more assessment or proficiency tests. Make-up tests need to (with regard to testing) be arranged between instructors and Education Services staff before students actually take the tests. All testing for students with disabilities must be coordinated with faculty. Students must have qualifying documentation on file with the Director of Disability Services. Placement as well as proficiency tests in English and Math are offered to students during New Student Clearance, Orientation, and at other times during the quarter. Students who meet the requirement on a proficiency test waive the related course but are still responsible for the credits, which are taken as an additional technical elective. Detailed schedules are posted in Education Services.

Math and English Placement Tests
Placement tests determine students’ placement in Math and English courses. All students entering The Art Institute of Seattle must take the Accuplacer unless they have transferred ASSET, COMPASS, SAT, ACT, or ACCUPLACER test scores or transfer credit to The Art Institute of Seattle.  The placement test consists of a Math and English portion. Students who have taken English or Math classes at another post secondary institution can have an official transcript copy sent to The Art Institute of Seattle. Once the information has been received, the Registrar will determine placement. Your transferred credit must be an equivalent to The Art Institute of Seattle classes. If they are not, you will automatically be placed in College Preparatory Writing or Basic Math.

Students who score below the appropriate minimum score on the placement test will be placed in GE83-College Preparatory Writing. Students who score at or above the appropriate minimum score will be placed in GE101 – English Composition.

Students who score below the appropriate minimum score on the placement test will be placed in GE82 – Basic Mathematics.  Students who score at or above the appropriate minimum score will be placed in GE112 – College Mathematics.

Proficiency Tests
Proficiency tests determine whether students can waive out of College Math and/or English Composition. Students must achieve the minimum appropriate score to waiver out of College Math and/or English Composition. You will need to take an additional technical option from your program sequence to complete the total number of credits needed to satisfy your program graduation requirements. Students are only allowed to take Proficiency tests once. Reviews are available in Education Services, room 616.

Testing Hours:
