The Department of Academic Advising
The mission of the Department of Academic Advising is to assist students toward success in their goals by strengthening and supporting their academic and personal development. This is accomplished through building partnerships with faculty, providing academic advising, offering tutoring, supervising testing, registration assistance, and creating opportunities for students to become effective decision makers and critical members of society. The Department of Academic Advising includes the Academic Advising Office (North Campus, Ground Floor) and the Testing Center (North Campus, Lab 112).
Tutoring Programs
The Tutoring program includes tutoring sessions in both one-on-one as well as in-class tutors. Sessions are offered by peer tutors and some faculty on either an appointment basis or during drop-in hours. Academic skills include math, reading, writing, history, public speaking, test preparation, and note taking. Peer tutors also offer tutoring in core subjects that relate to students' programs through a Peer Tutor referral service. Peer tutors' specialties and contact information are available in the Academic Advising Office and on the web at peertutors.com.
Testing Center
The Department of Academic Advising provides testing as a service to faculty and for students who have missed tests, who need disability accommodations, or who choose to take one or more assessment or proficiency tests. Make-up tests need to be arranged between instructors and Academic Advising staff before students actually take the tests. All testing for students with disabilities must be coordinated with faculty. Students must have documentation on file with the Director of Disability Services. Placement as well as proficiency tests in English and Math are offered to students during New Student Clearance, Orientation, and at other times during the quarter. Detailed schedules are posted in the Academic Advising Office.
Math and English College Preparatory classes MAT82, ENG83
Math and English are taken prior to the related General Education courses as a prerequisite (English Composition or College Mathematics). Passing scores on the ASSET, COMPASS, ACCUPLACER, SAT, or ACT tests for Math and English may qualify students for exemption from these courses.
Students who enroll in college preparatory courses MAT82 and ENG83 will do so in addition to their program course load within their scheduled quarter. While they do carry institutional credit, the credit does not count toward their program's credit requirements.
Since test scores determine placement in or out of MAT82 and ENG83, students cannot enroll in English Composition or College Mathematics until they have taken these tests.
A grade of "C" or better must be earned in the preparatory classes in order to move onto ENG101 English Composition and/or MAT112 College Mathematics.
